is the flame throwing talent usefulFollow

As a refresher, flame throwing adds 6 yards to the spell distance (so fireball can be cast at 41 yards)

I was in Colfang Slavepens and one guy in my group said that one boss had a 39 yard AoE. Hmmm I thought if I had the flame throwing spec I could stand at41 yards and blast away without fear of getting hit by the boss' AoE.

So my question is: would this situation happen a lot with bosses? Do most of them have a less than 41 yard range of spell casting.

If true, this is a great talent.

In any case, is this a worthwile talent to get

Personally I prefer PvP combat and for that - flamethrowing is wonderful. I'm sure you could do without it, but I'd miss it if I respecced.

I have a feeling it affects pyroblast too, which means your world soloing is generally more efficient and effective, because it's longer before the mobs hit you and therefore you lose less hp and ignite does more damage before you're hit.

I wouldn't take it based solely on the instance boss thing, although that would be a bonus -)

bosses often move. players are always on the move. spells take time to cast.

if you intend to get the talent purely in order to out-range an AoE effect, you will need to constantly be aware of your range and reposition when you need to. in pvp... maybe you could get lucky and hit a runner more often.

Yes it is.

And if you thought it was useful in Slave Pens, you should try it on Heroic Slave Pens. Talent is damn useful there.

I'm sure there are many many places elsewhere where it's useful, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment(I can think of one Pre-TBC content, but it's not that big of a deal atm).

PVP- Excellent talent. You hit them before they hit you.

PVE 5man- You actually cannot hit that boss and not be hit by the aoe. I have tried. It does have it's uses though as mobs will take longer to get to you.

Raid- Have yet to find a use for it in Karazhan or Gruul's Lair.

You have to be perfectly positioned, but I've done it a number of times.

What's really fun is running into scorch range to refresh the debuff and getting out, then repositioning all before the next AoE. Was certainly a whole lot easier when I had another mage to do it for me.

I love my personal scorch mage. Smiley: grin

Hmm. I spent about 2 whole minutes total over 2 attempts on heroic to find that sweet spot, no avail.

Err, I mean where you walk instead of running everywhere when you move. The "/" key by default, I think.

This doesn't have anything to do with the subject, but Poldaran. Wasn't that the name from the Belagarath series or something?

it doesn't matter if your in PVP or PVE or fighting in a group the extra 6 yards is always useful

Not exactly. The character from the Belgariad/Mallorean was Polgara.

As a note to the OP, I have now found one use for Flame Throwing in raiding. This is in Gruul's Lair, on Gruul himself. Those extra 6 yards will help on your positioning for the Shatters. Our raid leader came up with a tactice to have two people on each of the rocks surrounding the room to avoid the launch of shatter, having that talent means you can sit there perfectly and still nuke.

AND after 9 attempts, we finally killed that SOB.

Excellent.

Grats.

BTW, in reference to our conversation about Gruul's Lair the other day:

We didn't get Maulgar down. We made progress, but it wasn't really the night to be trying as people were tired and needed to leave early, so we only got a few tries in.

Though I have to say it's certainly interesting tanking Krosh Firehand.

Heh, yea it's a whole new headtrip. If you guys have the dps to take out the Priest and the Warlock, the fight really slows down and you guys almost have it in the bag. 70% of that fight is the Priest, lock, mage. After that, Maulgar himself is a pushover.
