A vending machine with legs. (j/k) A mage to me is damage at range. Two main types, controled dmg or bombdy bombdy pyro (of course there are so many different things a mage can decide to do, these are the only two that really work, imo)

A mage has been cleverly called the "Glass Cannon". We dish out awesome amounts of damage, and can take on multiple enemies at a time. However, when an enemy gets to us, we have a more difficult time surviving. We can be killed easily; even with the our survivability spells such as Ice Block, or Mana Shield.

with recent nerfs, mages are, more than ever, a "glass hunter sans pet".

The profound answer:

A mage is what it is. It is only by truly being a mage that you truly understand the mage. We cannot truly tell you what a mage is. We can approximate it. We can hint at what it holds, but we cannot tell you.

You see...if you're truly a mage, you just know what it is. If you're not, then no amount of explaining will ever allow you to comprehend.

A true mage is one who, when they roll their mage, can feel an alignment through the universe, and an angelic choir sings in harmony as the universe speaks to you and says:

"Welcome home."

It is when you hear that voice that you truly understand.

You can play a mage but not truly be one.

A squishy, A clothie....j/k he or she can actually do a ton of damage if he/she knows how to play, but an ambush for 500+ damage (lvl 29) normally makes for a bad day imho.

A mage, when understood, truly understood and played correctly is nothing short of sheer power at it's finest.

Sadly very few people know how to utilize them properly.

When I group with others, the remarks of "Holy ****" and so on are quick in fruition. The mass power I can bring to the table as a mage, in a group and alone is nothing short of amazing.

Nothing to do with my skills as a player, I am not bragging, it is all the class. A mage is something to be feared in the hands on someone who knows them well.

So what is a mage? A mage can be explained like this:

Quote:
Oderint dum metuant

That is all.

I have played a few alts. Playing a rogue confirmed that melee is definitely not for me, my hunter is quite fun, but I prefer my priest and warlock to those two, I just love casters.

BUT, no matter how much fun I am having with the priest or warlock, I always feel like I've come home when I play as my mage.

Edit: I never linked this to your question. The way I see it is that when you feel like I, and many other mages feel when they use them, you will have the answer to your question.

Lol, OP got owned, but really you could have picked up on a number of errors, the OP probably isn't the perfect person to be having a profound discussion with.

Still I like this thread because we can all post over-dramatised and romanticised answers.

a mage is the god of burst damage mages can dish out so much dps that it scares me when i land some heavy crit to the point where i just have to say OMG BBQUED they can be masters of crowd control masters of nukes masters of support even they are truly a great class and a fun class to play they can be a challenge to level unless you aoe grind but they are worth the time you put into it in the end of course they are also prone to nerfs apparently gods of burst damage have other gods to keep them in their place /sigh.

Ding ding ding ding ding!! We have a winner!!!

Being able to walk up to a lock, priest, mage, hunter or rogue around your level and

sheep
combustion
/kiss
pyro
fireblast
blast wave
CoC
arcane explosion
/grin

= hardcore pwnography.

Mages are the gods of neutral town pk too. We can kill our targets in gadgetzan/booty bay before the gaurds take us out mwahahaha.

A mage is a grenade, a gun turret or an attack helicopter, take your pick.

Jaszon you beat me to it =P. And wowtrollmage, you can easily tell that by his first post in this thread:

And maniacu, either this was you or someone else with the same sig, it's A, not an, A WoW-Obsessed Man.
[Couldn't resist that =P]

But what a mage is to me:
Average Mage: Free HK
Skilled Mage: Hard fight

But really, to me, mages are a close second to hunters as my favorite class. They are extremly fun. Probaly one of the ultimate Role-Playing classes in the game. Nothing beats watching ~20 enemies fall at your awesome might. They are awesome killers, and the only class that you don't get bored out of your mind with while grinding. The are only second in kiting to hunters, but a very close match.

Found out today that mage is a lot of crowd control too. I was taking care of 3 creeps today with polymorph (obviously), chicken from Gnomish Poultririzer (good for a mage because you have familiarity with it due to use of poly) and then kiting.
