Are spiders really that bad?Follow

#1 Apr 21 2007 at 11:50 PM Rating: Decent
Fist off I know the stats and the abilities they can learn, so Im not asking this blindly. What Im wondering is would I be gimping my self badly while leveling w/o dash and a second dmg attack? I think spiders look really good and for me being so damn creepy and fairly unique is just a bonus. What it boils down to is, does the fun factors make up for the lack of talents?

I prefer Bears. They eat anything, have excellent Armor and Health, and can learn both Claw and Bite. A Talent point in Bestial Swiftness helps overcome the lack of Dash/Dive.

If you can learn to adjust your play style to the strengths and abilities of your Pet, then any Pet will do.

A spider shouldn't be too bad. For groups bite+growl isn't all that great, but if you go marksmanship your pets DPS isn't an issue. If you go BM it will still do okay, especially since it's a dps pet, and you get beastial swiftness.

Note that BS won't help you in instances, dungeons, caves, etc. All that would happen is you would wait a little bit before firing, but if you add up all the extra time your pet spends running - that's what could be spent fighting and moving on to the next mob.

From level 19 to my early 40's, I used a raptor as a pet. It had no dash and, while it could learn both bite and claw, I use just one of those for any pet. I had bite and growl for him. That was it.

I'm not saying that abilities like gore or screech make no difference, because they do. But you won't be doing yourself a massive disservice by choosing a spider over, say, a ravager. If you're BM specc'd then there's basically no doubt that any species will be a nice mean machine for you.

It will work ok, no matter what, though. Spiders are freaky little beggars and creeping the heck out of opponants can be a nice added element to any battle. Just go for it. See how you like it.

if you say you look creepy and you like that than get a spider :D. Nothing compares to the....well...creepy sound it makes when he moves like rubbing his mandibles. I had one and i loved him in PvE, but i had to leave him at lvl 24 in warm place, a loving place full of peaceful creatures....yes Burning Steppes.
I never had a crab but i think it looks awesome for an orc twink in Bgs :D

PvP i love my cat. I'm still using Humar to this day (level 66 hunter), never got tired of him... http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_humarthepridelord.shtml

He has Bite 9, Claw 9, Growl and Dash 3. Can close the distance very quickly with Dash, can pop frenzy very fast, and hits pretty hard too. Growl I keep on during PvE.

I don't think a Spider would be a bad pet either, it just depends on your style. I'd prefer a scorpion myself, I think they look cool, but a spider works too. I think spiders are somewhat lacking in that they can only learn Bite, Cower Growl. It Would be nice if they had a poison attack too. So as far as offensive pets go, I think Spiders are somewhat lacking. Cats, Windserpents, Bats, Birds, and Raptors are a bit more versatile as they can learn more skills. I wouldn't use a Spider for PvP though, the lack of a quick intercept attack (dash, charge, dive) really hurts.

A pet I think is a bit rarer and looks great is the deviate serpent, which has poison spit, a very useful pvp skill especially against Rogues...

Cashara has a level 60 black widow spider. She didn’t level up with it, but she did use it a lot in her late 50s. I think the black widow spider is the neatest/creepiest looking spider in game. Perhaps it’s because of all the horror stories of real life black widows, but I find that even virtual black widows are somewhat scary. And I can’t think of a better looking spider. She’s blends with the shadows in the dark and she glistens black in the snow. Most amusingly, I’ve placed her on the bridge in IF between the bank and the AH and a number of people intentionally avoided walking through her.

The highest level black widow in game is level 25. I tamed mine when Cashara was 55. I would recommend taming your spider as close to your level as possible, as leveling up a low level pet is a lot of work. But I do feel it was worth it.

I also have a level 40 bank alt hunter that leveled with two spider pets. And a hunter that leveled form 19 to 61 with an albino crocolisk, which only gets bite and growl. In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with having a pet with only those two skills. With bestial swiftness outdoor hunting isn’t too bad. And as a BM speced hunter I’ve not had any problem with them holding agro.

We play this game to have fun. So in my opinion you should choose whichever pet you enjoy most.

Thx for all the input. Seems like for the most part people reflect my own feelings of while not quite as good, any pet will do well if you play with it's talents (BM helps this alot). Calabar also I have the back widow also for the wicked cool/creep skin and sounds. Spiders ftw, I cant wait hit 70 and see him full grown.

I believe visuals are priceless. Anytime you can get a knee jerk reaction from an opponant it's a plus. And if they really don't like spiders in the first place, it will distract them long enough to forget about you ringing them up.

The best pet is the one you like!

Any pet will work.

That said, if you wanna "crunch numbers" (whatever that means)....

Spiders are slow - they never get dash, dive or charge.

They have no special attacks: many other animal types do.

That said, if you love the look of your spider - use a spider by all means.

I saw a troll hunter the other day w/ a pet "vanity spider" from the BS quest and a matching big hunter-pet spider - w/ the exact same model and color - that he had trained. Looked very cool.

Blizz really needs to give spidies a special - like "jumping attack" - or "webbed" (immobilized a second or two) - or "spider scare" - feared one second - eek a spider! Until that happens, hunters who are ... oriented towards numbers/pwnage will prolly chose other pets. Hunters who RP or are into coolness and think spiders look rad will continue to pick spiders.

Again, a spider will do the job just fine - and if you like it and can make it work, go for it. If you want, stable the spider and try out other animals a little, see if you like one better. But again, your spider will do fine.
