I think the first question you need to ask yourself is what do you intend on doing endgame? What does your RL schedual dictate your playing style? Solo? raider?
IF you go war, the chances of you being asked to tank are VERY high. If you raid with a guild, u know it would be prefered if you spec protection. Is this ok with you? Then go war.
If you pick sham, the chances of you being asked to heal are VERY high. If you raid with a guild, u know it would be prefered if you spec restoration. Is this ok with you? Then go sham.
Now, we both know War's and Sham's in either of their other specs aside from prot and resto, are excellent dps specs. So the next question is how do you like to do your dmg, (assuming you don't pick the non-dps party friendly specs). Its REALLY REALLY hard to beat a war in straight up melee dmg alone. Its also very VERY hard to beat up a war using melee dmg alone! War's are deadly upclose, and in the 0-5 range zone, they just about rule that area. In pvp, its just a matter of how many ppl you can stomp on, given your health. One good healer standing next to a war can mean a endless rampage.
Sham's are up there along with war's regarding melee dmg (course with the WF nerf...we'll see about that >.>), but to achive these melee #'s it takes a LOT of good gear, something that a war can do much easier. But, still a good enh sham can put up respectable #'s. Enh can take a "ok" melee hit, but no wear as good at a war. Course, Sham's nitch could be summed up by saying "we make other ppl look good!" That being said, next to a war, remember that rampage I mentioned earlier? Not to mention, concidering that a sham CAN put out good melee #'s AND heal...makes for a good overall combo. And thats just if you go Enh.
If you go Elem, well now things get a tad more interesting! Elem's are something akin to a well armored mage. Not as big a spike dmg per shot I mind you, but a stead stream of uncontested bolts every 2 secs are DEATH. Not to mention range is deadly in BG's, since it can take awhile for someone to find out where they are getting hit from, by then its usually too late. I think if your used to playing a caster as a lock, this might fit you better.
Only downside from playing a sham is you have NO CC, which I know is kinda the bread and butter when playing a lock in PvP. Your not as squishy as a clothy at least, but when your taking a beating from 3 other ppl, its not going to fair much better either.

Elemental is viable, you need to have 700+ spelldamage unbuffed though. Unless you find some noob guild that will let you in.
Actually, not really (tho 700 would be "nice). You can either play as the "500+ spell dmg" type of elem, or the 20-25% crit type (with about 350-400 Spell+), either is viable and a monster of a caster dps. Its a give and take for both tho...one does more consistant dmg, the other looks for for "consistant" crits, and more casting duration due to EF when it procs on a crit. The problem is that EF is about to take a BIG nerfing when the patch goes live, so there is question on how effective the the crit style will still play out. As the lowest MP pool caster in the game, not having efficient casting from EF, will mean that constant stream of bolts that a elem was relying on, will be much shorter than expected. Which then might force us to be the high spell dmg gear type by default, since that style wasn't MP efficient anyhow to begin with.
