How important is it to you guys to keep up your melee weapon skills? Do you every few levels go around and level up the skill with whatever weapon you have right now, and only level up another if you change weapons after like 10 levels, or do you keep up as many as you can?

I know hunters aren't supposed to melee, but on a bad pull, when getting multiple mobs off a healer (either in duo, tank dies, or simply over-pull) PvP, etc a hunter will do some melee, so how important are the skills to you?

I haven't really run around and delibarately levelled up my weapon skills when I haven't been at maximum level.

But, if you're in a bad situation and trying to get monsters off of the healer - SHOOT THEM. Distracting shot plus whatever - multishot... And put your pet on something else.

If it's an issue of multiple mobs you should try to kite - wingclip and run away - and trap.

I guess sometimes when I pull aggro on a monster that's almost dead (bad hunter! :D) I do end up swinging my spear a few times.

Every now and then, I'll go out to train them. Just sic my pet on a target, go up to it, and spam rank 1 Wing Clip.

i remember having 140-160 skill at lvl 49 in bgs and i kept missing with wing clip, and thus dieing alot from rogues and warriors. Then i got annoyed and did a full RFK with some lowbies only in melee. Now i'm about 10 skill points lower than my maximum all the time, and tend to hit with my melee weapon for the killing blow so it does increase from time to time.

I never really try to go out and skill up my weapon skill but if I use the same type of weapon for any length of time it generally gets maxed out. I run a lot of friends through lower lvl places and don't mind getting up close and personal and also I have gotten into melee fights with higher lvl mobs as well. Of course if I might have a hard time with the mob I will use ranged attacks but I get 1.5k crits melee quite a bit so I never really need to kite things in tight situations(pet dies, multiple mobs, etc).

It isn't. That said, I do like to keep my weapon skills up. Not maxed out, that takes fairly dedicated effort, but within 30 or so points of level maximum. This isn't important to me as much as it's kind of fun. Currently I'm wearing a pair of Hand weapons, since for the previous 70 levels my only effort in building that skill was the rare occasion that I was both in melee and disarmed. :)

It is best to keep all your skills up to date. That said, I would recommend working on melee skills on your own time, not during an instance run. (The poster that ran RFK had the right idea for when to melee in an instance.)

You never know when you won't be able to get far enough away for a ranged attack, and you may as well contribute while you are waiting for your chance to get back to the real hunter DPS, which is ranged.

I max a weapon's skill as soon as I get a new weapon of that type.

Not having max skill in your melee weapon = misses in PvP.
