I imagine that has to do with the fact that the Inquisitor is a different sort of position than the Warden and Hawke. Hawke was an apostate, so it didn't really matter if he was maleficar or not. Same difference; he had to keep his magic secret.

The Warden was a Warden, who have immunity from the laws prohibiting blood magic.

I haven't booted up the game yet, though, and I've deliberately kept myself ignorant of literally everything I could. But my hopes are high, because the sentiment pretty much everywhere is that this game is the best of the series so far.

BioWare said that they removed Blood Magic as a specialization because they didn't like the conflicting message it was sending when the main character uses Blood Magic freely while others dabble in it and instantly get turned to crap.

Allegedly, the Necromancer specialization is pretty similar to Blood Magic. I miss Blood Magic, though. It was the only reason I played Dragon Age 2. Mage feels quite underwhelming right now. I basically just thwack away with my staff and then whenever my mana pool is back up to 50%, I blow it all on Chain Lightning. Meh.

So far everything I've read about the new Dragon Age is that it's essentially a team~ish based game kind of like Skyrim, minus the butterfly chasing. I, on the other hand, have been playing 7th Dragon on the DS. I'm so with the times.

Translation: we suck at writing stories so we're going to take away a fun playstyle to make it less obvious.

Really? You can't create a storyline where the character becomes corrupt for dealing in blood magic? Is it that hard? Smiley: rolleyes

Watch all the CCP Games trailers for EVE. If you manage to do so without subscribing somewhere in the process, you, sir, are an Ãœbermensch.

I was sold on this one:

One of my favorite trailers in the history of ever. Go 720p, crank up the volume, maximize the window, and get blown away.

Is pretty. Smiley: drool

Problem is more kid related than anything else though:

1) MMOs don't have a pause button. I usually get around this by playing something stealthy, but there's a point that reaches its appeal limit.

2) People in MMOs may not enjoy playing with someone who's AFK 2/3 of the time they're logged in and may leave unexpectedly for long periods of time.

From what I've been able to gather from EVE (and I know very little about it, or if this is even a correct assumption) that pretty much means I'm paying $20 + $15/month, then I'm teaching myself to use something stealthy, and then running around collecting/ferrying goods and praying no one notices me while I try and earn enough money to pay for my subscription... Smiley: lol

I don't know, still looks like lots of fun though.

Ultimately the reason I've not returned to MMOs of any kind.

Protein, there's a 14-day trial, if you decide to check it out: http://www.eveonline.com/

The pacing is quite different from other games. There's no "go, go, go, go!" mentality except in fleet battles, but that's all super coordinated, and you probably don't do fleet battles unless you've got a sitter for the kid, anyway.

The game is quite forgiving in terms of away-time. I usually watch YouTube while auto-pilot freighting goods or mining. I mean, it's space, man. There's a whole lot of nothing out there. Kid calling while you're killing pirates? Hold down W (warp), click a station/planet in the overview, and go take care of the kid. The game will align your ship to the object you clicked and warp you out of harm's way.

I can usually find people in an MMO that I do enjoy playing with, chatting in guild with, maybe poking your nose into some dungeon content in a lazy-ish way, the problem is all those other people. They used to be pretty easy to avoid but now with random grouping being the cool thing, well... yeah.

So I just forgo the random content, and try and have fun. Means I seem to miss out on a lot of stuff, but at least I enjoy my time there more.

How easy is it to earn your subscription fee through in-game trading and stuff?

Unfortunately I'm the type of gamer that dislikes missing things, so MMOs without a solid static are an absolute nightmare for me. Hell, if I find out I missed something in a single player game I'll restart, regardless of how much time I'd already put into it.

You need to train up some skills that you probably won't be able to get while on the trial, so you would likely have to pay for the first couple of months. Not sure what the PLEX (in-game game time token) are going for right now, but they were around 500-700 million ISK back in the days. I've heard of Explorers who make 100 million ISK an hour by running exploration sites. Trading can turn a pretty big profit, but you need capital to get into it, otherwise the ISK/hour will be horrible due to ship size, cargo size, travel distance, etc.

Personally, I just mine a lot. The basic ore, Veldspar (equivalent to Copper Ore from WoW), is selling for a truckload these days because of the new expansion cycle (they release a new expansion every 6 weeks now) pumping new ships and stuff into the game. Last I played, Veldspar was one of the most profitable ore types in the game, and you can mine that almost the second you enter the game (tutorial will give you basic ships, modules, etc.).

Edit: While the tutorials have been improved to help the average player, the following developer quote still sums up the game's learning curve quite well:

Cool, okay that wasn't unexpected. I could always hope for more, but it is what it is. I figured you wouldn't be able to get anything decent on the trial anyway, or at least that was the impression I got by reading through various stuff online, they had plenty locked out.

3-4 months worth of $15/mo isn't going to happen right now though, which is a bummer. We'll see if I get a little spending cash for Christmas. Smiley: grin

If you decide to play, let us all know. I'll give you a bunch of ships to fly, Maz will get you started with something, and there are others who also play. Also, before you sign up for anything, let Maz know and he'll send you a buddy invite. He can split the PLEX with you.

Maz: they're selling for nearly 1 bil right now. No ****. Jita Buy Orders are about 850 million.

I forget exactly how to do it, but I think you go to the EVE website and look for "buddy invite" and if SP signs up and pays for a month, CCP gives you a PLEX. You sell the PLEX and do what you want with the ISK. CCP even encourages this, and there's a separate forum on the official forums for advertising this (you can advertise once a day I think) and people there usually keep 10% and give the new buddy the other 90%. I think you get 10 buddy invites a month.

EDIT: I used to know how this worked. You send a Buddy Invite and the person gets 21 days instead of 14 days free. If they like the game and sign up, you get the PLEX. They get an extra 7 days free time. Any deal you work with them is up to you. Here's a link to the officially sanctioned thread, with a lead-off Dev post. You go to your account page to send the Buddy Invite.

Oi, Maz, I see your "I can only cast a few spells" gripe and raise you "The keep didn't import my keep file and I didn't notice until 12 hours in."

Smiley: motzSmiley: motzSmiley: motz

Why the hell isn't there a synopsis when you upload your keep data, like DA2 had with the save file transfer? I mean, seriously.

You can watch an interactive synopsis there once you import your junk, I believe.

Edit: Also, the gameplay got more interesting once I switched to Fire and Frost instead of Spirit and Storm.
