This was originally posted in the Main FFXI Forum, but I need tech-junkie help. My first original problem was this:

Whenever I go to the Final Fantasy XI Config it opens up and look like this:

Then I got the problem that when I install FFXI, download all the updates, I go to play it and it closes FFXI even before I get to the character select screen, takes me back to POL, and tell some something about my hardware and other stuff. So then I posted my specs:

I got this info from the POL Viewer Config > System Information thingie.

1st off this graphics card is unsupported by FFXI - Only Geforce on Radeon 9000 series.

2nd problem why you are not getting to the conifg is that Direct X is not recognizing your video card chipset. Need to update your video card drivers to ones capatable with DX 9.

Thanks for your reply, helps me understand a little more. Say I was to buy a... well.., something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=40158&item=5117110038&rd=1

That's a geforce radeon 9000, right? But it says it says it has DirectX 8.1 version, not 9.0 (like I have,) is that bad?

First, the two supported video cards are nVidia GeForce or ATI Radeon, not GeForce Radeon.

Second, you can do a heck of a lot better than that Radeon 9000 (which is also a "powered by ATI" card, meaning some other company made the card). Check your local computer store sales papers for anything other than "SE" cards and use a site like pricewatch.com to see where that price falls (generally the low prices there are disreputable companies and off-brand cards and the high prices are ATI-built cards from reputable companies).

Edit: And don't worry about DirectX; any recent video card will support FFXI.
