Need help with PlayOnlineFollow

#1 Aug 30 2004 at 6:04 PM Rating: Decent
I was hoping someone could help me:

I have a broadband connection and I used to play FFXI without problem (last Sunday I played for 9 hours straight, no problems at all) but since Monday something weird is happening. Every time I try to access PlayOnline I always get the same message:
POL-0011. The network is busy or there is no response from the server.
The connection works fine when I’m using Internet Explorer, Messenger etc. but the same thing happens when I try to use PlayOnline. The only time I managed to run FFXI I got the message “Could not connect to server” after clicking Accept.
I reinstalled PlayOnline, checked configuration, corrupted files etc. and the same thing happens. The weird thing is that I can use normally PlayOnline and FFXI when I am using modem connection.
I’m pretty sure it’s not a virus or a program because I scanned the computer a lot of times.

Thanx for your help :)

Did you happen to upgrade to XP SP2? (assuming you are playing PC)

Edit: I didn´t noticed but in my Program List I have the XP SP2 patch, is that causing my connection problems?

I don't know where it's posted on Alla but here's the "Message to Windows XP SP2 Users" (http://www.vanadiellobby.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=ffxinews;action=display;num=1092450679):

Message To Windows XP Users
------------------------------------------------------------
Due to the firewall function of Windows XP Service Pack 2 which was recently released by Microsoft, a dialog may appear when you attempt to use the PlayOnline Viewer or FINAL FANTASY XI. If such a dialog appears, please select "Unblock" and you will be able to continue to play normally. This dialog can also appear after returning to the PlayOnline Viewer (in windowed mode) from FINAL FANTASY XI.

If "Keep Blocking" is selected, you may become unable to connect. By performing the following steps, it is possible to "Unblock" PlayOnline and FINAL FANTASY XI.

1. From the Start menu, select Start -> Control Panel and select "Windows Firewall." 2. Click the "Exceptions" tab to display the application registration screen. 3. If "PlayOnline Viewer" is displayed on the list, check the box next to it. If "PlayOnline Viewer" is not displayed, select "Add Program" and register the POL.EXE file from the folder where you installed PlayOnline. 4. Select "OK" and exit the "Windows Firewall" to complete the process.

For further details regarding Windows XP Service Pack 2, please see the below Microsoft web page.

Ok, I checked everything but there is no “Windows Firewall” in my computer and I never got the “Unblock” message so apparently that was not the problem.
Is there anything else that could be causing problems?
