6800 Ultra IssuesFollow

#1 Sep 05 2004 at 6:23 PM Rating: Decent
I just recently upgraded from a 9800 to a Nvidia 6800 Ultra. now my graphics are choppy and extremely slow... I did the clean driver install, reformatted and reinstalled windows, updated to DX 9.0c and used 61.77 drivers, used DX9.0b and 61.76 drivers (the oldest drivers that support the card). Is there something I am missing here? Or is my card not supported by FFXI yet? I would hate to have shelled out this money for the card only to have to switch back to play FFXI.

All my other games: Farcry, DoomIII, etc.. Play exceptionally well compared to my old ATI. Its only in FFXI I am having these issues.

Edited to add the following info:

My PC specs:

Windows XP Pro SP 1a
P4 3.0GHZ
Corsair TwinX 512 PC4000 (Dual Channel)
Abit IC7-Max3 Mobo
WD Raptor Drives x2 in Raid 0 config
Vantec 530 Watt Pwr Supply
Pioneer DVD drive
Sony 52x Burner

All bios and drivers are current and up to date.

The 6800 card is supposed to be THE best card on the planet at the moment for ffxi

As I can't get anyone to sell me a !@#$%^& pcx geforce 6800 yet, i do not have alot of experiance with that particular card yet, but I do know a few things to check for. First of all, check and see if your network card or sound card are sharing an IRQ with the geforce card. That irq issue is more important with ffxi due to the network resources it uses

Also, make sure your AGP aperature is set to 256mb (assuming you got the 256mb card)

The 61.77 drivers reportedly had an issue with ffxi that I don't know if has been fixed yet. the 61.76 drivers should be fine though.

if the IRQ thing isn't it, i'd check FFXI settings to see if anything is amis there

Thought I'd tack onto this post rather than start anew.

Just did a major on my system upgrade : new stats

Processor type/speed: AMD64 3400
Total Hard drive space/Free hard drive space: >30 GB
Amount of Ram: 768
Video card type: 256mb 6800GT AGP
Operating system: WIn XP Pro
Computer model number (if it has one): ?
frequency of problem: every time I start using FFXI

XP died becuase of the changes so I have had to do a complete scrub to the bedrock and reload. In case anyone is curious there are >10,500 files to download to get pre-CoP FFXI up to scratch atm - about 8 hours on a 1mb ADSL download.

Everything now works perfectly except whenever I get past the "friends and family disclaimer" section to the pick a character section it starts an irregular stutter. This makes FFXI unusable - it is effectively a R0 lag spike every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. This is not connection related as everything dies - as R0 sufferers know you can usually turn on the spot until the system forgives or boots you.

All the indicators are that it is a graphics issue - as sometimes the stutter freezes a misformed graphic segment.

The obvious question - is there still a 6800 issue when used with FFXI and if so - when is it planned on being fixed, does anyone know ?

Well I got mine to work....Apparently there is a problem with some of the bioses (plural of bios is???). I can't link the site but if you search hard enough its easy to find... SE says that the 61.77 drivers are compatible w/ FFXI and 6800 (This is complete horse***).

Btw as far as the flashing the bios for your video card: I DO NOT recommend it unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing.

Edited to add:

I still have a problem with this card. Every now and then the game will give a huge lag spike or I get major lag when someone does certain skills. THF's Steal and PLD's Sentinal or Defender ability.
