A computer problemFollow

#1 Sep 16 2004 at 9:15 PM Rating: Decent
I just formatted my com, installed wins xp and installed service pack 2. However, for some reason when i am downloading .torrents file, my computer would automatically reset after quite some time. It's not blaster worm or whatever bug. After the "auto-restart" when it boots into windows, a pop up showing "Microsoft just recovered from a serious error, Do you want to send a report?" some lines like that.

Any computer gurus here? Is my computer configured wrongly that lead to the "auto restarting". The weird thing is when i am not downloading .torrents file, there will be no problems. Some other cases like downloading of other files from some websites will cause it to auto reboot.

Some information which might be of help to you guys out there:
c:FAT32 system (Master), d:(cd rom drive) e:(cd rom drive) f:NTFS (Slave). "Busy" indicator was not connected to my mainboard (I don't know how to connect it to which pin?). For some reason, i only saw the PowerLed, ResetLed and one more led(I forgotten, but definitely not "Busy" indicator led).I am using ASUS A7N9X mainboard.(I think, cos i am working now..cant double check it)

Before i forgot,I lost the mainboard manual so i do not know how to connect those led pins. The connected ones are with the help of my friend. He too, also do not know how to connect the "Busy" indicator led. Any form of help/advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S: I am a computer ******.

Most likely an error is happening, but your computer is resetting before it lets you know about it.

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

The next time it happens at least you might get some info

yup, Alabazman hit it on the head there. Also, make sure before trying to do a long downlaod like that you have all the windows critical updates installed. various win32 viruses that attempt to install via the svchost bug can cause that, even if your computer is not actually infected if the patch is not up to prevent it.

I followed the instructions given and this time i got this blue screen appearing instead of just rebooting. I have written it down on a piece of paper:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down in order to prevent damage to your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NO_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, diable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advance startup options, and then select safe mode.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Edit: This error screen appears when i am downloading .torrent files. It's the 2nd time i have received this error screen.
Now what? lol

See, error messages are your friend! That message means your Alcatel SpeedTouch USB xDSL modem driver is self destructing the
kernel under high load conditions. There are known problems using SpeedTouch on WinXP.

Upgrading to the latest driver will fix the issue:

Thanks Kaolian, I'll try that when I am off from work. By the way, how do you know that it was the modem that was giving me the problem and which one should I download?

Alcatel Speed Touch USB:

Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP
Drivers:
PPPoA v1.6.3
RFC 1483 v1.6.3

alacan5wn.sys is part of the modem driver for that specific modem, which has a known issue with downloading bittorrent files if it isn't patched.

as to which file, you probably want the top one (PPPoA) based on this:

"If you were an early DSL customer (prior to 11/99) using “bridged” technology or connect with the NTS PPPoE client, the RFC 1483 downloads would be appropriate for you. BellSouth’s newer DSL customers should use the current Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (PPPoA) downloads."

Hmm I have downloaded the PPPoA v1.6.3 driver. Updated it, and this time i could not dial into the net. Previously my dialling number was 0 after i updated it, it changes to 35 (default). I tried dialling with 35 and 0 but still couldn't dial into the net. What's wrong now? Do I need to do something else? I hope i am not pissing you off. Lol

ummm, that's not good. maybe your ISP doesn't support that build of the driver. Try reinstalling the driver you got with the modem, then call and ask them where their modem download drivers are.

It could just be a setting issue too.

For some reason, my com is ok now when downloading .torrent files. Here's what i did:

1.Uninstall old driver
2.Install the new one (PPPoA v1.6.3)
3.Couldn't dial into the net
4.Install the back the old one
5.System prompts me to overwrite some file (from program files to system32), alacan5wn.sys is also included along with some other files.
6.Target file is newer than the source file so i chose not to overwrite it.
7.It works!

Thanks everyone. Wanted to rate you up but doh...5.00
