FFXI: HDD Question

I posted this on another forum, and all I got were complete different answers. So maybe someone (especialy a PS2 user) could answer this question.

Problem is I just got COP and started getting DRE's again so I am having problems installing it because obviously it can't read the disc. /sigh Tried all the DRE tips, cleaning laser, tape on cd, blowing dust out and still a no go. I would try putting the PS2 in a horizontal way but I'm afraid I might damage the HDD.

Which leaves me to my question. Would it be safe to remove the HDD off from my PS2 and put it back on into another (preferably my friend's PS2 to install COP) and then back into mine again. Would taking the HDD out ruin my character or pol data? Or if anyone has a suggestion on getting COP to read feel free to give some advice. All I really want to know was the question about the hardrive.

If you take it out and put it in another PS2, you are going to have to reinstall everything on the HDD, because I think everything is tied to the serial number of the PS2.
