This is what it brings up on System Information in the POL Viewer Config.

The only problem I can see maybe posing a problem is "Type of Chip = Unknown Video Chip" but I am not sure if it is a problem, where the problem lies or if it can be fixed. When I try to run FFXI it opens all the way through POL, lets me push play, and goes along to attempted loading FFXI, then it comes up with an error;

"Terminated as error occorred in FINAL FANTASY XI. Failed to recognize Hardware Tnl.
Please check that this computer has the required specifications to run FINAL FANTASY XI.(-1)"

Something that also might be related to this is that the FFXI Config tool doesn't work properly either. It opens up just fine, but when it comes up, it's got the FFXI logo up top and says FFXI config, but the box that is supposed to have all the options in it is blank.

The system I am trying to put it on is my laptop computer. FFXI works fine on my desktop, so I know it's not a problem with the CD's or my internet connection.

Does anyone have any ideas on any solutions to this problem? Thx in advance.

Its because of the intergrated video chip you are using. Buying a real graphics card will solve the problem.

After installing the video card, make sure you disable the onboard video card in your bios before booting back into windows.

Since you are using a dell laptop, I would guess it would be a huge nightmare if even possible to install another video card.

Call Dell with these specs to see if you can install any NVIDIA or ATI cards on the system.

Oof, didn't notice the laptop part :)

Yea, FFXI is going to have a hard time running on a laptop.

correction: ffxi will flat out not run on that laptop, as any card lacking hardware TnL is incompatable with ffxi. sorry.

you have the same problem i used to have... Yeah, Dells cheap so they give you an onboard video card, and they dont allow you to install one you want while customizing the video card... my recommendations are: get a dell 5400 Dimension, and buy a 70-200 $ video card(DELLS NEED A CERTAIN TYPE OF VIDEO CARD, REGULAR ONES WILL NOT WORK!!) and beef up the space, and then you have a good enough computer to work with. :) Happy Delling :P

If you are a gamer I recommend avoiding dell, compaq, etc.

They tend to use proprietary hardware that is incompatible with other market standards, and for the most part you will be unable to upgrade any part of the system.

?
Older dells use AGP cards, the newest top of the line ones use the new PCI express 16x standard. how is that not using regular cards?

Of course, in this case since it is a laptop he is screwed...

Your computer too has an integrated video card. A new card will solve your problem. What is your budget for a new vid card?

You're not going to find any new video cards that'll be sufficient at that price. Might wanna try eBay and such. I have an old gforce mx 440 AGP layin around I could let go for around $50. I don't know how well it will play FFXI though.

Yea, it should work. If I'm not mistaken the 5200 is a lower end card but should work for FFXI. If you can wait maybe Kao can let you know for sure.

So I have to get a PCI card, cause I have no AGP slot.

Can you tell me the difference between these 2 cards on the top of this page? Other then the name of course, or can you reccomend any other PCI cards that will run FFXI nicely?
