FFXI/POL Connection IssuesFollow

Hi. ^^

Game: Playonline and FFXI
Platform: PS2
Connection: Cox Cable Internet via cable modem and router
Info: I live near a college campus, so I share an internet connection via router with my 4 roommates.

I've been having connection issues for a while. POL loads up very slowly, at times giving "busy" errors. If I retry a couple of times it will move on to the next step in connecting.

In FFXI, my send/recieve will fluctuate wildly, sometimes dropping into the double digit range and causing lag. I often have lag spikes, as well.

The problem is, cable internet is included in the bundle at my apartment complex, so I seem to be unable to access the online router settings program.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions as far as settings in POL or FFXI that I could change or anything else. I've tried playing around with network settings in POL, but I don't really know what I'm doing.

Thanks in advance.

Is there a cable modem and router in your apartment that you all use, or do you connect your computers network card to an outlet on the wall?

You should be able to adjust the router settings through a web page interface by typing its internal IP to your browsers address bar. Most commonly it is 192.168.1.1, but check your routers manual or ask whichever roomate owns the router.

There aren't really any FFXI settings that will affect network lag and the game will always try to use as much bandwidth as it can.

A more likely cause of the lag is all the other people sharing the connection. If they are all using their computers at the same time you will have less bandwidth to yourself. If any of them are running filesharing software you can ask them to limit their speeds or turn it off when you want to play.

I don't think your problem is with the router.
I have been having the same problem with Cox cable internet.
Playonline has been known to have problems with certain ISPs; may be they're having a problem with Cox right now.
