I have a Dell Inspriron 8600 Pentium M 1.7 Ghz 512mb RAM ATI Radeon PRO TURBO 9600. My laptop runs FFXI good for the most part. It runs it smooth, but about every 5 to 7 minutes, sometimes more, sometimes less, the game will start to lag and turn choppy for a few minutes. It would then run smooth after that and then repeat. Is this normal? Would this be a computer issue or a cable internet issue? It gets annoying sometimes, like when I am searching items up in the AH then all of a sudden it turns choppy and it gets harder to navigate the menus and move around because of the large number of PCs on screen.

Getting more RAM would probably help.
In crowded areas of the game there is higher demand on your system. Your processor and vid card are pretty good, so my guess is that your memory is filling up when things get busy.

You might also take a look to make sure there are no other applications running, and maybe turn down some of the graphics effects.

I have tried disabling all background apps, and it still happens. I turned down all graphical effects, lowered the res, turned off shadows, etc. and it still happens. My last option would be to up my RAM. How much should I up it? my laptop has two slots, and can be upgraded to a max of 2 gigs of memory.
