Graphics Issues with FFXIFollow

#1 Nov 23 2004 at 10:59 AM Rating: Decent
Ok this is really starting to annoy me, I can't seem to fix my graphics problem. No matter where I am or what I'm doing I seem to encounter choppy graphics. I recently upgraded my desktop to try and solve the problem, but it hasn't helped here's what I'm running.

1.4 ghz P4
768 MB Ram
128 MB Radeon 9600 SE
and I have the 4.8 catalyst drivers
1.5 MB DSL
windows 2000

my game settings are choppy even on 800 x 600 and 512 x 512.
When I turn it up to 1024 x 768 and 1024 x 1024 I don't notice any difference. I also have about 90% of the game filters running to try and elimiate lag that way. I thought it might have been the catalyst driver but it is compatable with FFXI according to that email notice they sent out.

Oh and I don't have my anti-virus software running when I play, I unload since this was causing issues on my laptop as well.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Its hard to position yourself as a Thief for fuidama when you have so much choppyness.

NOTE: I posted this in the main ffxi forum but was asked to move it here :)

I'm going to try and reinstall direct x and see if that helps. I'm also in the process of doing a disk cleanup and then a defrag.

not an expert but i would think your GFX card is a bit outdated
you could upgrade to a later version.. maybe 9800 ? i cant garantee it will work tho :|

I dont think thats his card unless it's on the process of dying, i have a ATI 9600 and I run EQ2 and FFXI just fine, I'm not an expert either though.
If you have a laptop try to send the card back, but before you do try to update your drivers and all the good stuff.

I don't think its my card, I just installed it a few days ago ^^

Sorry for the confusion, I'm having problems running the game on my desktop, my laptop, which is what I use at college, has the following in it:

1.7 ghz PM
512 MB Ram
32 MB RADEON 9000 MOBILE (sucks I know)
I have the dell video drivers installed. (because nothing else will work with that card ><)
Windows 2000

And I can run this at 800 x 600 and 512 x 512 with no lag, it doesn't look great but at least I'm not lagging. Now my desktop which is where I'm having the problems, has much better hardware but I can't run it without getting lag.

Here's what I've done to trouble shoot.

- Re-installed Direct X 9.0c
- Installed Catalyst 4.8 Drivers
- Turned off all effects and turned down screen size (no affect)
- Checked for virus/spyware/adware (found some spyware, used my armor2net to remove with no change in the gameplay)
- Turned off all applications running in the background that I don't need while playing (i.e. Norton Anti-Virus, Armor2Net Firewall, IM programs)
- Ran both Disk Cleanup and Defragged

Nothing I've done far has had any affect on the lag that I'm getting. I think what I'm experiencing is lag, its like I'm running and the image on the screen stops for a moment and then starts up again and I skip ahead of my position but a small amount.

Someone mentioned I should try an older version of the catalyst driver with my 128 MB Radeon 9600 SE card. Does anyone have this card that would be able to tell me which driver they are currently using? Or is they're having a similar problem? Thanks in advance for the help.

Ok, I think I might have a heat issue. Its possible that my fan that came with my computer (Dell 8100 Dimension) just can't cool the new video card. Could anyone tell me where I can get an additional fan that will fit in my case? Thanks. If that doesn't work I'm going to reformat my harddrive (which is always fun).

Thanks~

When i played FFXI, i was getting VERY much lag, i really mean MUCH!
Then i read somewhere that turning your sounds off increases FPS and it did! no lag anymore even in highest settings
My comp:
1500 mhz P4
512mb 133mhz RAM
Radeon 9700 pro 128mb
Intel D845WN mobo with integrated sound card
2mb connection

You really should try disabling sound from your desktop's FFXI options and please, tell me if it helped you, i really want to know.

You can get case fans just about anywhere that sells computer software/hardware, even office supply stores. For a quick test though just open up the case and run the game while it has plenty of airflow.

This sort of thing is usually caused by the processor taking on too much workload, or your memory is overfull. Double check that nothing else is going on in background and check out the sticky by Angsty about scum/spy/mal/adware.

I suspect with the slower processor, you would need to turn down some of the graphics features. Uncheck the other options in FFXiConfig (bumpmapping, etc.) and tweak things for performance in your ATI config menu.

If the card is not AGP that could also be a bottleneck for you.
