Service Pack 2 MeltdownFollow

#1 Dec 06 2004 at 11:01 PM Rating: Decent
It seems that for the second time, windows XP service pack 2 has caused one of my systems to become totally unusable. When I start my box up, it takes me to a windows login screen, (this was NEVER here before), and after I log in windows never starts, and the whole system reboots. This state is impossible to recover from. Starting windows in safe mode causes the exact same thing to happen.

All I have read on forums and from MS's website says nothing about this issue. One of my boxes has SP2 installed with absolutely no problems whatsoever, and the other is now a paperweight. WTF!? Anyone else have this problem?

The only thing that is different about the systems is the one that works fine is a P4 3.0Ghz, the other that crashed is an AMD XP2000. I've read about other folks who have had no trouble with AMD chips at all, so I doubt this is the issue.

Please help. You are my last hope before I strip the offending system down to parts and scrap the beeyatch.

Oh and by the way, thanks for nothing Microsoft. Next time you release something and charge exorbant amounts of money for it, please make it work properly. Thanks.

I used ghost 9.0 to backup before SP2. Lab tests at work showed a HORRIBLE failure rate. Luckily my home system which died when SP2 first came out installed fine over the weekend.

Someone in the OOC forums told me there is a .exe file that I can delete to recover the system. Is there any such file?

It's important to point out that installing SP2 caused some programs to not work properly, so I went into Add/Remove programs and tried to uninstall SP2. After this, I was prompted to restart, thus getting me to this infinite restart mess.

If this was indeed an issue of uncompatable hardware, uninstalling SP2 should fix the problem, should it not?
