WoW: Updating ErrorFollow

#1 Dec 12 2004 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
Hello. I am posting this here because it won't let me post on the official WoW forum (it says "Restricted Forum"). I think it's because I haven't created a character yet, so I'm just "Anonymous" on there.

Anyway, I just installed WoW and then downloaded and installed a huge patch. After that, I restarted my computer, and then loaded WoW again. When I tried to login, it downloaded another patch. It exited WoW, and opened the installer to install it, but it always crashes when it gets to 19/11399. Here is what the error says:

Quote:
The program was unable to find a file required for patching.

File name: WoWErrorAE.exe
Error: The system cannot find the file specified

If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support.

When I click on "OK," another window comes up that says to try reinstalling the game and reapplying the patch (I really hope I don't have to do that...). When I click on Show Details, it says:

Quote:
Blizzard BNUpdate v2.97 compiled on Oct 27 2004
Log created at 12:40 pm on 12/12/2004

This patch upgrades World of Warcraft from version 1.1.1.4062 to version 1.1.2.4115.

ERROR: unable to load file 'WowErrorAE.exe' from disk
The system cannot find the file specified.

RESULT: Patch failed

If anyone here can help me at all, it would be greatly appreciated. I really want to play the game! Thank you.

Okay, I have downloaded WinMPQ to view the MPQ files, and found the missing file on one of the CDs (Disc 3, which happened to be the last one I checked), and copied it into the WoW directory. This didn't work because it always said the file was in use by another person or program (which it wasn't). So I got around this by hitting ctrl+alt+delete and ending Explorer.exe, and then running WoW.exe so it would try again. Then it told me it didn't match the checksum or something.

So finally, I decided to try the reinstallation, which it had suggested in the first place. Only problem now is that when I try to uninstall it, whether I do it from the Installer.exe on the CD, or in Add/remove programs, it says, "Sorry, uninstallation has failed. 'Uninstall.xml' could not be read."

So now, it seems that I'm stuck with this 4gb game on my hard drive that I can't even play >< ....

Another update:

I was able to uninstall the game manually. Someone posted how to do it on the WoW Tech Support forum. They said to delete the whole WoW directory, and the WoW stuff from the registry. After doing that, I reinstalled it, to a different directory (C:\WoW), as was also suggested on the forum (I think by the same person). Before anything, I checked the directory, and saw the WoWErrorAE.exe file there. So I copied that file onto my desktop. Then when I exited the installer, my computer just rebooted on its own; no warning or anything.

When I logged back into windows, WoWErrorAE.exe was no longer on my desktop. I have no idea why... Anyway, it was still in the WoW folder, so I copied it there again, and also into My Documents.

A little more browsing of that forum led me to a post where someone had uploaded the first patch for people to download, instead of using the Blizzard Downloader. This was much faster than using the Blizzard Downloader. I usually get like 30kb/s on the downloader, but I downloaded from this webspace at like 300kb/s. So after that was done, I put the file in my WoW directory and ran it. This is when I encountered another problem...

The problem this time was that it could not find "WoW\Data\speech.MPQ." I checked the Data folder, and indeed it was there. I tried to run the patch a few more times, and always got the same error. So then I just tried to run WoW, but that wouldn't even start. Now it was telling me that speech.MPQ was corrupt ><.

Now I don't understand how a file that I just installed from the CD could be corrupt... But then I'm not even sure if that's how it happened; or if the patch, which said it couldn't even find the file, corrupted it. I hadn't tried to run WoW before I ran the patch, so I don't know where the corruption came from.

Anyway, after all that, I uninstalled the game again. This time, it actually worked when I tried it the right way (clicking "Uninstall WoW" in the installer.exe). I'm going to try this again later. Right now, I have to study for a final (which I don't think I'm going to do well on anyway...).

Yay! I got it to work! Quite simply by installing it again, and using the blizzard downloader and installer to patch it. It all worked this time, so all is well :).
