sorry, accidentally pressed enter, this is my post:

I have recently bought FFXI and after having installed the playonline viewer it says i need to update it. I have tried many times on many occasions to download it and it doesnt work, comes up with a POL-1161 error invariably after varying amounts of time, i have all known firewall and antivirus software disabled, i dont have any routers to my knowledge (although if anyone could give me a surefire way to check it would be appreciated), i am running XP with SP1 NOT SP2 and i have tried re-installing the playonline viewer, has anyone else had these sort of problems? if so how did you fix it? the POL people suggested a re-install of windows but i really dont want to have to do that.

Also there are quite a few spyware and adware problems on my computer at the moment and i am finding that every time i turn off my antivirus and firewall software they get worse so i would like to configure them to let the POL viewer do it's thing rather than having to turn them off, i am running Norton Proffesional, any suggestions?

Thanks, Pete.

You have to open every ports from 5000 to the end (65535) from you to the FFXI servers.

For exemple on ragnarok server square IP range are :

61.195.48.0/20
202.67.48.0/20

both TCP/UDP

Good luck !

If you ve got a netfilter firewall for your gateway I give you a simple iptables script :

#
# FFXI
#
$IPTABLES -N Cid419E3C4B.0
$IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -s 192.168.0.0/24 -m state --state NEW -j Cid419E3C4B.0
$IPTABLES -N Cid419E3C4B.1
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.0 -p tcp --dport 50000:65535 -j Cid419E3C4B.1
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.0 -p udp --dport 50000:65535 -j Cid419E3C4B.1
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.1 -d 61.195.48.0/20 -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.1 -d 202.67.48.0/20 -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -N Cid419E3C4B.2
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.0/24 -m state --state NEW -j Cid419E3C4B.2
$IPTABLES -N Cid419E3C4B.3
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.2 -p tcp --dport 50000:65535 -j Cid419E3C4B.3
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.2 -p udp --dport 50000:65535 -j Cid419E3C4B.3
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.3 -d 61.195.48.0/20 -j ACCEPT
$IPTABLES -A Cid419E3C4B.3 -d 202.67.48.0/20 -j ACCEPT

If your modem is connected directly to the back of your computer, then you do not have a router. A router is a separate device you can buy that allows you to share one internet connection between multiple computers and helps increase security.

If you have spyware and adware problems, you should address those first before trying to get FFXI going. There is a sticky by Angsty that might help you out, though if it is bad enough you might be better off reinstalling Windows.

On my 'Application-Triggered Port Forwarding' screen, I have the text field to enter the inbound ports that I need to open, but it also asks for an outbound port number. The text field for the outbound port is 5 character max, so I'm thinking that only one port at a time (1-65535) can be entered there.
My problem is that I can't find anywhere on POL that says anything about an outbound port number. Does anyone have any idea what number to put in the Outbound port text box?

Download these and run them:

Spyware:
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2

Virus:

They should clean up your machine of well known viruses and spyware and alow you to log on to PO.

You should not have to modify your router's settings if you have one since connection to PO servers are initiated by your machine. The game works through my companie's firewall and all inbounb connections are blocked.
