I have a problem with FFXI locking up my system. Both the FFXI Benchmark 3 and the FFXI game itself have this problem. My system is brand new, as I just finished building it thursday, and it doesn't have any spyware/adware/virus problems. If it is relevant for a solution, this is what's in it:
BFG FX 5700OC
Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe
AMD 2800+ Barton (XP)
1GB Kingston PC3200 ram
The system never locks up on anything except FFXI and the benchmark prog. I'm using the nvidia v66.93 driver if it matters. If anyone can help me to get this game running without freezing up, I would greatly appreciate it.
Edit - Oh yea, I have Win XP Pro SP2 running on it, for additional info for whatever relevance it has ^^

Is the locking up of my system because of the video card, or some other aspect of the system, maybe the OS? Is anyone else having problems with FFXI on Win XP Pro SP2? Or have similar problems of system locking up while playing FFXI with any software/hardware whether similar or different from mine? I'm really desperate to get this fixed somehow ; ;

I had the same problem as you for ffxi
System Spec:-

First thing to do, as AngstyCoder mentioned, is to check your supply rails... You can do that in the BIOS...
Make sure that the supply is no more than 10% off the stated amount...
Check that your directx version is up to date...
With regards to the "latest" nvidia driver, look for one that is WHQL signed... All the "newest" driver means is that it supports the latest cards (6800, etc etc..) I can't remember the link that I used to download the driver, but if you can't find it I can post it here later...
One final thing... After about 2 weeks of battling with my PC in terms of why it locks up, the thing that helped me the most was to change the AGP frequency to a bit above default... I have mine set to 80Mhz through the BIOS... I found this when I had problems and was experimenting with the setting...
Please note... These methods are ones that I have used, and they have worked for me... I cannot guarantee that it will work for you, and if it causes any adverse affects to your system, please use at your own risk...

board chipset drivers and video drivers are up to date.
the 12v rail is stable at around 12.4v and never drops below 12v
im not sure if there is an irq conflict however, and directx is fine, running 9.0c

It worked for me... I don't know if it would do the same for you, but there shouldn't be any harm in trying... The most it can do is not boot up until you do a BIOS reset... :p
Disabling the onboard video wouldn't hurt either.
It is a ps/2 mouse and the board has no on-board video.
Also make sure you get drivers from the vendor of the card as well. They might have tweaked some settings of the chipset to alter performance that Nvidia's OEM drivers might not like. That is rare but I know when using XFX's drivers over Nvidia's Direct Drivers I get 5-10 frames more per second.
Also make sure your drivers are up to date on everything.
Finally Defrag. Here at work I have seen office not load due to a hard disk being fragmented to hell. After Defragging, it loaded fine.

BFG doesn'a make their own drivers, they use Nvidia official drivers for everything. I've tried over 5 different drivers, including the most new driver. It's still locking up, although not as much as it used to, it still does it ><
I would look into temperature problems or maybe memory next.
Temps are just fine, and ram is just fine also. Maybe I should try going back to directx 8.1 and see if ffxi likes it better than 9.0c?
I've uninstalled drivers and used programs like drivercleaner and stuff like that to completely remove all driver components, and then resumed to try further versions drivers. Still locks up on me =/

Only thing I can think of left would be trying to swap in a different video card, switching out the ram, or removing the sound card, see which component is the troublesome one. It could still be the mobo too.
Have you tried playing any other games?
EDIT: also, at what point in the game/benchmark does the system freeze?

I RMAed my card and got a new one to see if the card had a problem. Got the new 5700 in on tuesday, put it in, and tried again. Still locks up... Either FFXI doesn't like the 5700 or there is something else in my system that is wrong. Anyone can help me out? ><

You guys think it could be a heat issue? Living in hawaii....it can get pretty warm inside and I think my CPU temp jumps to 52C~ or higher during the day. I think the lowest the CPU temp has been is 38C~ or so. >< I'm running out of ideas as to why it locks up my whole system, and it seems FFXI is the only game that does it now.

Ok...I just rolled back to DirectX 9.0b and with v56.72 driver, and so far so good. But that means nothing, as it has run this long without freezing up. I will leave ffxi running while I sleep and see what it's doing in the morning. I hope it doesn't lock up again ><
