OK I am pissed.

Here are my problems:

Programs that don't load on start up any more:
mouse drivers, norton AV and FW, MSN Messenger & hotmail
comp won't shut down, I have to remove power

I can't access secure sites, nor play games

I need to be able to play games to work, no worky, no paycheck.

I tried system restore, went all the way back to a date in Nov I was so desperate. No luck. I changed all internet settings back to default. I went in and deleted all but one hotfix for SP2 and I don't even have SP2 installed!!!!!!

Housecall states no virus

Sounds like Norton went into thermonuclear meltdown and took the rest of the startup system with it. Here's what I would do

1. Completely remove Norton.
2. uninstall messenger

3. Do a reinstall of Windows. Don't format or anything, just a repair installation. That will require you to reinstal some progrmas, but it should stabilize the registry

4. Install all windows updates, including SP2. the issues with SP2 affecting games have been resolved and are no longer an issue at this point, so no real reason not to.

5. Install the latest build of messenger. then reinstall trillian

6. reinstall Norton.

That should fix it

Oh, to be safe run a spybot scan sometime in there too

Well I uninstalled Norton. Reinstalled Windows XP Pro.

I can use Trillian with MSN now, however I cannot connect to the Windows update site for updating. Mouse drivers still don't load.

And page loads for the internet are outrageously slow. It really feels like a virus the way it acts, but everything I use says I am clean.

I still can't connect to my bank for https pages. But atm no AV and no FW installed, so I can't go to far off the beaten path.

Gotta go to work, will post more information after I get home and work on comp some more.

Not sure if it's the case, but a friend of mine had a similar problem with slow page loads and such. Thought it was a virus but turned out his network card was going bad. Sure it's not all your problems, just an idea.

Everything is installing smoothly, even got into a couple games and can check my accounts online. I will keep a close eye on the computer for the next couple days to see how it acts. But everything I checked it with came up clean. Norton, Trend Micro, Adaware, Spybot, Hijackthis.

Thanks guys!

I recently had a problem where every web site went into the trusted site zone. I use firefox so it wasn't a real issue but knowing I Was infected by somehting really bothered me. Thankfully I use Ghost 9.0 and make weekly backups to an external hard disk.

Point is, check that out, will save you a large amount of pain in the long run. I keep a base day 1 image with all programs installed and updates applied along with a weekly backup. Anything goes wrong, in 20 minutes I am up and running like nothing happened.

It really seems like Norton had a melt down and took all start up load programs with it. Wasn't that big of a deal, just a little time. When I get some extra cash I will get two more SATA raid disks and have a mirrored set with my striped set. I also have a HD that took a dump during said time and could have been the culprit. Thanks for the tips though, will keep that in mind!
