FFXI performance issueFollow

#1 Mar 24 2005 at 12:59 PM Rating: Good
Hello all,

I had to recently reinstall Windows Xp and the game on my PC, and since doing so, I have noticed a significant performance hit when I'm in an area where someone does anything with a visual effect, such as:

MNK uses Boost
NIN cast Utsusemi
BRD play a Song
Either PC or mob get a Critical Hit

I'm running FFXI in 1024x1024 mode, with 1024x768 overlay.

I have the following specs:

P4 2.4 gig @ 400MHz
1 gig RAM
256MB nVidia Geforce FX 5600 (Forceware drivers v.71.84)
Windows XP w/ DirectX 9c

Before the rebuild, I was able to run it without any issues- however, I was wondering if it could be either the drivers (i.e.- roll back the drivers to the "approved" version), or if it might be something else I overlooked.

Any feedback is most appreciated- thanks! Smiley: bowdown

Mobo drivers are current- but thanks for the suggestion- it's a good one.

I realised I hadn't done a defrag yet (d'oh!)- will try that first, then roll back video drivers to the approved one.

Im having basicly the same problem. Whenever somthing would be summoned, only fractions of it would show up, or would just become a transucent ball. I was told that updating my drivers would help, but now im in the same boat as wond, which is really bad because im a brd
anyway i have an nvidia 5200 and was wondering if any1 knew a way to install old drivers or another way to fix this problem. I tried to load drivers off of a disk but it wont work.

First of all, thanks to all for the responses! Rate up! Smiley: clap

I ran a defrag of my HDD, and it improved performance a bit, although I still noticed slowdown issues whenever in an area where visual effects occured.

I uninstalled the nVidia drivers v.71.84, and rebooted. I installed v56.64 (the ones approved by POL), and it ran okay. I suspect that the latest nVidia drivers are either resource hogs, or poorly written for FFXI.

Note: I also ran DxDiag as a precaution- the diagnostic passed without errors.
