ATI vid card and FFXI issueFollow

I've tried everything I know. I've been to numerous friends for help. Still, I'm having the same problem over and over again.

The problem: After a random amount of time, usually no more than 20 minutes, FFXI will lock up. After about 10 seconds of being locked up, my VPU recovery kicks in and restarts the graphics accelerator thus shutting down the game.

The specs: I recently purchsed a new MB and processor and my vid card is also relatively new, but was working fine on my old MB and processor. My old processor was an AMD XP1400 fyi.

I have an ATI 9600XT vid card
AMD Sempron 3200 CPU with a
Gigabyte GA-K8NS MB

Solutions I've tried:
I have the latest Catalyst Drivers
I have Direct X 9
I have Windows entirely updated
I discovered an overheating issue with my vid card which I fixed.
A stick of RAM wasn't showing up, so I removed it and will replace it later.

Solutions I haven't tried but will before I sleep tonight:
Changing the videocard to AGP 4x in BIOS (my old MB only supported 4x. The vid card is reverse compatible, but the new MB supports 8x)
Lowering the graphics settings of FFXI. These are the graphics settings I used on my old PC with the old processor and MB. I think they should work fine, but this will be the last thing I try.
The absolute last thing I will try is a complete reinstall of FFXI.

Anyone else have any other solutions? I'm going crazy trying to figure out whats wrong.

I have the exact same problem.

I couldn't even get past character creation without FFXI locking up and the VPU recoverer kicking in (Usually this would be very useful, but the problem is that FFXI sees it as you losing full screen, and POL hates you)

I switched to older drivers that didn't have this problem, and now it only happens to me around 3-4 times a day. What's funny is that it usually happens either : When I just cast something on a mob, when our party member pulls something, when I'm running away from something, or anything else that can result in my death if I crash.

I have a Radeon 9600XT, using Cats 4.1 (5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 used to crash every 10 seconds)

According to my drivers, my card is idle at 30 degrees celcius, which is normal, so it's not overheating etc.

So yeah, I'd change back to older drivers if you want to play for more than 20 minutes, but of course, it will still happen...

I switched my card to AGP 4x in BIOS and the problem is fixed... i think. I also lowered some of the graphics settings.

I removed environment stuff both in the settings and in game (weather affects) and I haven't crashed since. If I crash again, I'll try lowering disabling AGP 8x and putting it at 4x.

Also, do you have AGP fast write on?
