Whenever i first start up FFXI and get into the game, it runs fine with no slowdown or anything, however once i get into an area with a large group of ppl, or do a lot of zoning, or just play for an hour or so, i get severe video lag. I don't think it's my card overheating, cuz if i log out and restart the game it's fine for awhile again. Also, if i turn the sound off in FFconfig b4 starting, i get no slowdown at all, so obviously my video card can handle it, and my sound card should be able to. I thought my sound card was bad, but i just bought a new one. Some kind of conflict maybe? Anyway, my Pc is:

P4@1.6
Nvidia GeForce Fx5200 w/256vram
512 RAM
SB Audigy2 ZS sound card
Running on windows xp
Installed on a 30gig HDD with about 4 gigs free, also have a secondary 80 gig drive with 70 free

Sounds more like you are overfilling memory. Make sure you are closing down any background applications and check out the sticky on spy/scum/ad/malware. You could also try using memory management software, like maxmem.

Other things to check are that you have the latest version of directx and up-to-date video drivers.
