Problem with CDRW/DVD-ROM and with task manager boxFollow

#1 May 14 2005 at 6:29 AM Rating: Default
I'm having two separate bugs that I think may be related. One is that once I boot up, my CDRW/DVD-ROM drive only stays available for a few minutes, then it becomes "not accessible". The other problem is that when I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager (running WinXP), the box pops up but without the tabs along the top for applications, processes, etc. I run AVG anti-virus per the topic in the Tech Support forum for "Removing Malware...", and the last couple times it says that two files were "Changed". One was the Shell32.dll file; I don't recall the other. I'm afraid that there is malfeasance afoot. Any insights?

sounds like you have one of the spyware versions out there that disables the cd drives andpops up a message saying that you need an anti spyware program. But that portion may have been cleaned. Run spybot search and destroy, the new microsoft antispyware thing, and ad-aware and see if that does the trick

Thanks Kaolian and Angsty; I really do appreciate the advice, and can't beat the price! :)

So I ran all but the new MS spyware gimmick, haven't downloaded that yet. The CDRW/DVDR is working again, but I still don't have the tabs on the top of my Task Manager. Is there somewhere in the registry or something that controls that, that I can play around with and really ***** things up, or am I looking at reinstalling Windows?
