XFX Nvidia 6600GT Poor Performance FFXIFollow

Hello Guys

I'm looking for a little help please. I recently replaced my old graphics card ( ATI Radeon 9600TX ) for a XFX 6600GT 128mb AGP 8x. I was expecting to see a significant increase in performance but so far have been disappointed with the results I've seen.

I've used the FFXI Benchmark program to compare performance of both cards. The 9600 scores 2000 in high res mode. Initially the 6600GT only scraped in with a score of 2818.

To improve this I thought that the old ATI driver may not have been fully deleted. I downloaded a program called DriverClean and followed its instructions to the letter. This program found remnants of the old ATI driver. I also deleted the Nvidia driver using the same program so that I could start again with a clean slate.

When I reinstalled the Nvidia driver ( according to Windows Update I have the latest version ) performance only improved slightly with a new score of 2920. I then dowloaded and installed a driver update for my motherboard ( MSI - M601 - SIS648/655 chipset )As the update was named "SIS AGP Driver Update" I thought this would solve the problem however only another modest increase was seen with a new score of 3105.

Doom 3 defaults to medium quality settings - according to the review the card received it should be able to play Doom 3 at a hgh setting at least

I'm sure the card is being held back by some kind of conflict. I'd really appreciate any advice that can help me get the most out of this card.

My PC spec is.....

Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz
512mb 333mhz SDRAM
25gb free hard disk space
XFX 6600GT 128mb 8x AGP 1000mhz

Thanks In Advance

Hmm interesting question.

I'm not sure you're seeing anything out of the ordinary, what you're reporting there is a greater than %50 performance increase over the performance of your old card. That's not too shabby at all.

I'd suggest that you try various sets of Nvidia drivers from their website until you find the one that gives you the best performance. There is an archive on the left hand side when you go to the driver download page. Don't go with the ones from windows update.

I'd also try tweaking those settings up in DOOM 3 and seeing how you go. Just because it defaults to medium settings doesn't mean that it won't perform well with higher settings. See if you can find out what frame rate you're getting. This article should be a fairly good reference guide as to what you can do with your card to bump up it's performance. Don't expect results like the ones in that article, they're using a faster CPU/Chipset combo.

I have the same sort of problem as you - I used to run the game on a 9800Pro, and then upgraded to a MSI 6600GT.

My results are here:

I realized shortly after continuous tweaking and driver changes, that the problem of the 6600GT's poor performance comes actually from some sort of 'incompatability' with the game graphics or rendering. I can bench all computers at the same time, I notice certain 'spikes of lag' that occur during the benching of the 6600GT, while I don't see them in the 9800pro.

I believe this is due to some sort of rendering or programming bug that the Geforce line of cards use, which the Radeon series don't have a problem with.

However, the first and possibly best tweak I did to the 6600GT was disable Fast Writes in the bios. This alone shot up my original score of 3500-3600 to 3900-4000. Still, it does not beat my 9800pro having 4500 in the same PC.

We just have to hope for SE to do something about this. But I fear that not much is being done, even their 'compatible graphics drivers update' fails to mention the 6600GT series line.
