Questions about going from WinXP to LinuxFollow

I'm looking at setting up my system with dual boot and installing linux in hope that I can do away with using Windows XP Pro for the most part.

So far I realize this is going to take some time on my part backing up files and cleaning up my hard drives. Biggest problem to start is changing my c drive from NTFS to VFAT if possible or just moving programs and files around to my other 3 old FAT drives.

My s-i-l suggested using Fedora and Transgaming, so I can play EQ, but I would like to have the input of others on how I should go about setting up Linux on my machine. Much as I wish, living on a fix income doesn't allow me to make upgrades at this time. As long as I can play EQ and CivIII plus visit the Asylum and Ogame daily I'm happy. This is what I have: In small print to save space.

Ok, first you will probably need to change one of the other partitions to whatever you need it to be. Probably use PartitionMagic or some other partition manager.

Though I have not done anything with installing two OSes except like Win95 and some old version of redhat years and years back, I just googled a bit and found this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306559

That should help you somewhat.

Heres another tidbit I found: http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html

Remember to do a couple of defrags before repartitioning.

Btw, I honestly hope you won't have to deal with actually mounting all the drives and video card drivers and whatnot that I had to do when I was isntalling Debian. I pray that your RedHat will doo it all for you;-)

EDIT: It is rather funny how right about everyone uses WinXP build 2600... and how Micro$oft still can't protect itself from illegal instalations.

Transgaming does require a $5/month membership fee to use Cedega.

^ keeps current links to most flavors of Linux.

Fedora, Mandrake, or SuSe make good choices for beginners just wanting to get going quickly. If you really want to understand Linux and get your hands dirty, try Slackware or Debian.
