Two problemsFollow

#1 Jul 03 2005 at 1:31 PM Rating: Good
My situation: I recently purchased parts of Newegg and built myself a computer. The parts were all recommended by a friend who used them to build himself a computer and in themselves got 4 or 5 out of 5 stars on buyer review. I set it up and installed the operating system [Windows XP Professional] just fine.

My two problems:
1: When I hook up my monitor [AOpen F90JS 19” LCD (16ms)] via DVI to my video card [ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16] and boot up the machine I get display up until the Windows splash screen at which point it goes black. I plugged in my CRT to the DVI (using a VGA->DVI connector) and rebooted and this recurs. I then plugged in my CRT->VGA on video card and I got display just fine.

2: Occasionally when I start up my computer I get to the Windows splash screen, see a blue error screen, and the system reboots.

Here is some additional information regarding the specs:
Motherboard – DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939
Case – Thermaltake VB1000SNS Silver Steel/Plastic ATX Mid Tower
Hard Drive – Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6B250S0 250GB 7200RPM Serial ATA150
Memory – Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory model PDC2G3200ELK
Sound Card – CREATIVE Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value SB0400 8 (7.1) Channels PCI Interface

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? Thank you ahead of time.

First thing I would do is get Everest running and check for any conflicts via IRQs. It's listed in the Devices category.

Also check for conflicts in the hardware managed under Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device manager.

You also forgot to mention the CPU but I would assume that you are careful enough to get the appropriate CPU for your board.

The only reason I would think that the CRT monitor with VGA would work is that they are generally PlugAndPlay...therefore...no drivers and stuff.

IRQ conflicts have gone the way of the Dodo and are now reserved for the few people who are stupid enough to upgrade their hardware while running windows 98 (i'll go fill ALL 6 PCI slots) :P.

As for the problems...

1. Sounds like your CRT is set at a higher resolution than your new LCD can support. Try pressing F8 upon windows start up and "enable VGA mode". Then adjust your resolution til you're happy.

2. Might be a RAM issue. If you've bought some nice quick RAM chances are the timings are just a bit too tight in the BIOS and this is causing your crash. Do you have any working knowledge of adjusting your RAM timings in the BIOS so they aren't quite so fast?

Yeah I setup my ram as such:
command per clock: disable
Cas latency: 3
ras to cas delay: 4
tras: 8
trp: 4
ram running at 200mhz

They were all on auto before so it may have been that. I am also uninstalling the Catalyst Command Centre (it doesn't have DVI frequency reduction capabilities) and installing normal Catalyst 5.2. Hopefully these two things fix both problems. :)

Maybe try booting into windows and adjusting your refresh rate on the CRT first?

Bog standard DDR 400 should run at 3-3-3-8.
