FFXI Problem with Latest Nvidia Drivers and 5200 FXFollow

Alright.. can anyone clue me into why every Nvidia driver after like, 57.** on this 5200FX card makes XI completely run horrible?

Basicly, everytime a model or texture loads the whole area looks like a checkerboard. Summons are also screwed up for some reason, they look horrible and glitchy. This also creates immense amounts of video lag, especially around summons. (I play Summoner too..)

I don't really want to downgrade to really old drivers, and I kinda need the new ones because of a problem another game has with older drivers. I can't buy another card either.. no money. I don't know what to do.

Man, I just get back into XI after a break and this happens..

I've seen a lot of problems people have posted regarding the GeForce FX5000 series of cards and heaps of people seem to have the same problem.

I'd advise you wade backwards through the board and search for a solution.

Hi there,

Yeah, I have the same thing on my NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra AGP card. Basically if I dont run the 56.64 drivers:
ver.6.14.0010.5664

It runs like crap and I spend my entire play session casting while staring at the walls.

It seems to run okay with them, though I cant help but feel I am missing out not being able to get newer drivers...not to mention HL2 hates me.

Good luck!

Older drivers seem to work just fine for me. Check Playonline news updates conserning graphics drivers. When ever they issue a update on compatible drivers I just upgrade to those.
Send a tech support request via POL viewer if your not 100% sure, thats how I found out I needed to use older drivers.

I had this problem when I tried to update my driver for my 5200 around Xmas time last year.

Recently tried 71.84 and that displays fine. Haven't tried the latest driver yet.

Nvidia and FFXI appear not to mix well. I have a Nvidia Geforce MX440 (I know its outdated, but I have more important things to do with my money right now). I recently had to do a clean reinstall of my system and downloaded the new Unified drive 7.7.7.7 and then ran FFXI. I was fine for several minutes. Long enough to get a party. Then after a couple minutes partying my PC rebooted itself. I got it started again and attempted to play again. It was stable for about 2 minutes and then crashed yet again. I had to uninstall the driver and install the original driver that the card shipped with. I have had no problems since then.

I have several other programs that I run that keep warning me that my driver is out of date, but its the only driver that is stable with FFXI. Only advice I can give you is to run with a stable driver for the time being and check on new drivers every once in a while to see if any provide a stable environment for FFXI. But, I can tell you that 7.7.7.7 is not a good driver to use.

It makes pretty good sense that older drivers work pretty well for the older Nvidia Cards.

I think the numbering system they go by now generally corresponds to their current line of cards. For example any driver set beginning with a 5x is probably better suited to the 5000 series of cards. Same goes for the 6x and 7x driver sets. Most recent drivers are generally better suited to more recent cards.

Sometimes it can pay to simply go backwards through their drivers until you find the best performance for your card. This applies to most games, not just FFXI.
