I had this problem last year and corrected it by purchasing and installing a new video card. However, since the new update, and my upgrading to a monitor that doesn't suck. I have once again had these problems start up full blast.

FFXI will, for no apparent reason, quit to desktop with no error. Sometimes however, it will be in a much more foul mood and activate the blue screen of death. Giving me the following error.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

(random blathering about stuff that doesn't help)

Stop 0x0000000A (0x00000010, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804D8FC9)

I don't have a clue what this error means, it's the same error I had last time this happened. Which was over a year ago.

Here are my specs.

Processor type/speed: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, MMX, 3D NOW, 1665 MHz

Total Hard drive space/Free hard drive space:

Amount of Ram: 768MB

Video card type: Diamond S110 128MB DDR Radeon 9200

Operating system: Windows XP Professional

Computer model number (if it has one): eMachines A26EV17F

Also the monitor is an HP Pavilion M70, but I don't know if that matters or not.

Frequency of problem: Seemingly random sometimes only once every two-three hours, sometimes 30 seconds after log in.

My conflicts Sharing, since I know I'm going to be asked for it.

I also found that Dxdiag says that this file "Qasf.dll" is out of date. I don't know how to fix that. Virus scan turned up nothing. I also did a registry fix, but I don't think it will help.

First off is this happening with any other games or anything else that stresses your system. The random crashes do sound like a hardware issue, if it's not isolated to FFXI then it's almost definitely the case.

Start off by testing your RAM with memtest.

See how you go with that and post your progress.

I can't run memtest because I don't own any blank floppy disks. I haven't in years.

Could of sworn you guys suggested this last time and I told you the same thing. I don't own floppies.

Edit: And thus far I've only had this problem with FFXI. Since I upgraded memory cards no other games crash.

Burn a bootable ISO CD.

Instructions on the web page, its not very hard.

Is your system adequately cooled? Can you give us reports of what temperatures your CPU is running at at idle and when you are playing games?

how do I find out my system temperature? I don't know how to do that.

There's a few listed on this page.

You can find the idle temperature by going to the BIOS and checking in the Health section.

I use speedfan myself and am quite happy with it.

Ok, my fan is going at 4441 rpms.

Temp 1 -73C
Temp 2 44C
Temp 3 74C
HD0 162C
Temp 1 40C

I really don't know what this means. Temp 3 and HD0 have flame symblos next to them. (Using speedfan)

The temps given are clearly unreliable. Your hard drive would not be operating at that point...Ever.

Ok, I am totally confused now.

I don't know how to access BIOS. I still cannot run Memtest because I don't have a CD burning program or a floppy disk.

And now Speedfan apparently doesn't work right.

Go to your local 'Staples' or some business/stationary store or a computer store and get your self some floppy discs.

You can access BIOS by tapping certain keys depending on the BIOS manufacturer and your motherboard manufacturer.

They include F2, F6-8, and the 'Delete' key right next to the Enter Key...

For my old computer it is the delete key, for this one it is F6...

Just press one of those repeatedly from the time you turn your computaru on until it shows the BIOS. I do assume you know what BIOS looks like, right?

BIOS Info for CPU Health

System Temperature 41C
CPU Temperature 73C
CPU Fan 4440 RPMs
Chassis Fan 0 RPMs

I'm guessing that means my chassis fan is dead. But would that cause games to crash?

It would cause a heat issue that would cause programs to crash. Replace the case fan and you should be set.

Ok, I will replace the fan asap, in the mean time I've rigged a small fan to blow cool into the fan ducts as a temp fix.

Actually, how long ago did you get your computaru, because if you got it recently, then it may be normal. My computaru was running at 70C Idle for around a week before it colled down 5C and then went down to around 45C shortly after.

Make sure you CPU Heatsink/Fan is seated properly.

I've had this comp for about 18 months. And I put in a new video card about 11 moths ago. The fan was running fine until recently, I didn't notice it was burned out though.

Also It's been hellishy hot aronud here lately, and that maybe a factor.

Your Athlon XP shouldn't be running anywhere near that hot.

As suggested, get some new case fans.

DEFINITELY replace your cpu heatsink and fan, the TR2-M3 is a very good, cheap, quiet heatsink/fan.

AMD heatsinks of that vintage are complete ***** and i've seen various different machines with similar problems.

Outside room temperature is a major factor in your case temps. Over here where I am right now, room temp is around 75F, which is ~25C?

The colder your room is the more you will get out of the case fans. It's simple thermodynamics. The colder the air outside of your computaru, the more it can cool the innards of your computaru.

I wouldn't suggest running an air conditioner all day and night because that is simply inefficient, but if your room is like 70-75+Farenheit, then that really sucks, because while the case fans are nice and loud and transfer a lot of air between the case and outside, they won't cool much. Getting more powerful case fans won't help immensely if it is 85F in the room where you do whatever with computaru, not that I don't like 85F. I can easily stand and enjoy being in a room with temp up to 95ish F.
