I recently upgraded my computer with a new motherboard, cpu, and video card. The issue at hand seems to be with the video card, the nvidia drivers, and FFXI. HL2, Doom, BF2 all run brilliantly with highest settings. FFXI? It either freezes my whole system ~or~ crashes to desktop due to pol.exe having an error with ffximain.dll
I turned to FFXI/POL tech support first.
Initially they said it was a router issue. I set myself to DMZ (because I obtained a new IP from router upon new system/Windows installation) and problem still occurred.
I contact the same desk again and then they said it was probably the video drivers and to try a different one.
Since the 7800 GT line is new I figured GTX drivers would work as well. Evidently, no. The latest drivers from nVidia (the 77.77) are the only drivers for the 7800 GT. Anything older either refuses to install because it cannot find compatible hardware or it attempts to install but never really does. It just cycles the installation upon restart.
I called eVGA since nVidia doesn't directly support anything except their DVD Decoder. eVGA technician was not aware that the drivers that came on the CD did not work for the 7800 GT and that I could not use older drivers. He kept me on hold while he talked with someone in product development. He came back and said I was right that "it seems the only drivers from nvidia that will work are the 77.77's. The CD was probably from the GTX series with an older driver set." He was right. I asked him, "So, I am SoL?" And he said at least until FFXI either updates the game.
I turned back to POL HelpDesk Chat (which seem to be nicer and more knowledgable that anyone I have talked to on the phone there). I fill in the person with the information. He tells me that the latest tested and verified drivers that function with FFXI are the 66.92. I tell him that will not work with my video card. He asks which one I had (again) and then tells me upon my reply that that video card series has yet to be tested. He told me to wait until it is tested and verified or hope that the next set of drivers for the 7800 GT resolve any issues with the 77.77.
Anyone else running into this?
