Error running EQ on new laptopFollow

#1 Sep 07 2005 at 11:10 AM Rating: Decent
I just bought a new laptop as my old one went kaput. The new laptop has the following specs:

HP Pavilion zd8055
P4 3.2 GHz
1 Gig RAM
ATI Radeon Mobility x300 graphics chip
DirectX 9.0c
Currently has 36 Gigs free HDD space
Windows Server 2000
Page file: 302MB used, 2158 MB available
17" widescreen display
Recently defragged

This laptop has absolutely no issues running EQ2. However, I just installed EQ on it.

When I start up EQ, the patcher runs fine and patches the game. However, when loading up the game itself, I get the following error every time:

EverQuest: eqgame.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x1000e16e" referenced memory at "0xfffffffc". The memory could not be "read".

I have updated all drivers and still have no joy running EQ. My suspicion is that the graphics renderer for EQ doesn't know how to properly scale to the widescreen display on the laptop but don't know for sure as the Sony tech support site specifically states that they don't support running EQ on laptops.

Anyone else attempting to run EQ on a widescreen laptop and, if so, are you successful? Any ideas on how to resolve this? I'd really love to two-box in EQ again.

I've never had good luck running anything game wise on 2000 period - some stuff just acts wierd. Any chance of dual booting with XP/2000? That'd be my suggestion.

99%, this is the reason.

Widescreen is not a problem. The worst case, it will run with wrong ratio, and characters will look fat.

Also, most companies do not directly support laptops in gaming officialy but almost all of them are optimised for laptops. My Sony Vaio Laptop, which is Widescreen, came bundled with Trial version of Everquest II. I have never tried it though, I play FFXI and love it. Now i am gonna install and post results for you here.

I've been able to play every game I've attempted to on this laptop running Windows 2000 Server with the exception of EQ.

Guild Wars, EQ2, Civ III, Brothers in Arms, Ground Control II, Silent Service III, Dungeon Siege, Stronghold II, WoW - all run with absolutely no problems at all.

I wonder if it may have something to do with the fact that I installed EQ Platinum. I've seen compilations sometimes cause problems with certain systems where the original release version runs fine.

I'll try installing from my original EQ disks and the expansions separately and see if that gives me any different results. Otherwise, I may just reinstall XP on the laptop and see what happens. Guess I can run Server in VMWare when I need it.

I'll post results when I get them. Thanks for the responses.

Uninstalled EQ Platinum and installed EQ Trilogy. Same error after patching.

Will run the system restore disk on the laptop today to restore Windows XP Home.
