Screwed up backup files after format (Win2k)Follow

#1 Sep 08 2005 at 9:20 PM Rating: Decent
During the last few days i had problems with my computer. It often crashed saying some hardware material was incompatible with my current hardware. But i didn't install anything new on my computer for the last months. So i started scanning for viruses (did a couple of scans with diff anti-viruses with latest updates) and returned nothing. Scanned for spywares and nothing came back. I did a system check (disk scan, defrag) and everything seemed fine. So in order to reject the theory that it's a software problem (aka windows "shutting down") i decided to format.

Quick info on my computer :
-Mobo : Old ASUS A7V8X
-Speed : 2ghz
-Ram : 512mb
-Vid Card : Radeon 9800 pro
-Hard Drive : 200gb (all in 1 partition prior to format)
-OS : Win2k pro
(if you need more info please ask)

So i wanted to backup a couple of files (FFXI stuff, mp3s, work+school files...) so i created a logical partition to store it in so it would survive the format (copied and pasted files that were not being used by processor). Divided it 50/50 and filed the new D: drive with 50gig of backup (dont ask). Everything runs fine until now and i make sure everything that i want to save is on the D: drive.

So now i format, wipe out the C: drive and reinstall Win2k (don't trust XP, unstable). Everything goes as planned exept at some point Windows starts doing weird stuff :

Relocating orphan file {random file} into folder {random folder number}

The random files were the backup files from my D: drive. Now i don't know if this is good or bad but I often did reformats with backup drives and never saw this.

Alright so now that this weird part is over Windows starts it's usual installation process. Everything from here goes smooth. It finally finishes, I install my drivers and SP4 and do the usuall reboot. At this point i decide to check upon my backup files. At my grand deception (and frustration), half the files are wrong. I've got .txt showing all kinds of symbols (as if it were encoded but i'm pretty sure its not), got .mp3 and video files playing sounds of other files (1.avi in folder 1 is playing (from half) the song 3.mp3 in folder 2).

Basically half of my stuff is in pretty weird shape. My 10 bars of macros wont work. I dont want to download/find/buy all my stuff again.

If you have heard of a similar case please get back to me. If you know of a place (website, irc) that deals with that kind of stuff please tell me.

I'm begging for help ; ;
Thank you for reading
