Okay.I recently moved to college, and stuff. Now, I didn't get much lag problems last week, if at all.But just recently, during the DDoS attacks or whatever, I've been getting extremely bad lag.My friend had it for one night, but now her connection is normal and mine is still messed up.I logged earlier just before maintenance and it ran fine...

Do you think this is congestion of college network? It might be...I get great websurfing capabilities, but my download speeds are messed up and of course FFXI is lagging...

Yeah it could be congestion on your college network, particularly if you're getting sluggish download speeds.

Have you asked the network admins if there's any reason behind it?

If you're playing in the midst of a DDOS attack there's a good chance that the servers are feeling the strain and that'll translate to you getting lagged.

No other software running in the background like BitTorrent or eMule or etc.? Are you clean of spyware, viruses?

I cleaned out my comp recently of virii and spyware, but I'll run another scan...Who knows what's turned up?

As for the whole playing during DDoS attacks, my friends play just fine (Even one on a 56k connection!) with faster speeds than me.It takes me 20-30 seconds to interact with NPCs or open doors...And nope, only software I've got running in the background is Winamp. And sometimes AIM, but I shut that down and still get lag

Edit: Ran Adaware, deleted 38 objects, 7 of which were critical.However, no real improvement.It's gotta be heavy congestion, but damn, even the weekends aren't this bad x.x;;

Have you got a different network card to try?

I'm assuming that you're hooked up through the college network?

No, I've not got another network card...My current one is an onboard Realtek 8139, latest drivers. I wish right now that I had taken the PCI network card my stepdad offered me XD And yes, I'm hooked up through the college network.I'm gonna try FFXI again now that it is morning, see if it lags or not.If it doesn't...Eh, guess it's just the network lag at night.

If not, I'm gonna kill something XD Everytime I think I'm gonna get a stable fast connection for FFXI, something messes up =P Fate hates me.

I was getting some skipping this morning, but last night all was well. Zone didn't seem to affect it, Jueno was as bad as Bastok.

Is your lag constant or mostly during weather elements? Try turning off the weather effects in the in-game config menu. Run some speed tests, too. Report the results.

Lag's constant...I normally slow down during weather effects, which doesn't bother me much, but the R:0s and stuff do =/

I think I found the problem, though. I was running FFXI for 2 hours with no bad lag...Then my roommate got home and started using his comp. After he started his IM program and messed about on the internet for a bit, I started to get lagged x.x;; I'm guessing it's because, although we're plugged into different jacks in the wall, the bandwidth is shared between us, so when he's on and I'm on, we're sharing the same line, so to speak.Ah well, guess I'll have to wait until he leaves on weekends XD

Thanks for the help, though, guys...

Tell him to stop downloading so much **** then. =)

Also get him to clean his machine of spyware and trash, that kind of stuff can end up chewing up quite a bit of bandwidth and you won't even know it's running.
