#1 Sep 15 2005 at 6:05 AM Rating: Decent
I open up PlayOnline, click FFXI.
Yes,yes, i wont forget my job and family..
Aaaaand Black Screen...have to ctrl-alt-del to close it.

Anyone have any ideas?
I tried the port forwarding method already, no dice.
I scored a 4000+ on the Benchmark2 <and have previously played FFXI without problem>.

im just hoping whatever method to fix, is different than my assumption that re-installation is my best bet.

I hate FFXI mainly for its insanely stupid patch times.

To all the fools who use the latest drivers...DON'T

If you remember to look at the page which SE/PoL says which drivers are guaranteed to work, then use those.

For example. SE guarantees that for ATI Radeon cards the Catalyst 5.3 drivers will work.

The drivers SE guarantees to work for GeForce cards are the 66.92 series if I am not mistaken...(I am RED CAMP)...

If you are using the latest drivers, there are som problems...

1. SE's code does not approve of them.

2. They may reduce lag or processing times for one calculation/application, but make it worse for something else.

3. The methods in the various drivers are different and something may go wrong or not display.

4. Etc.

Oh, and during maintenance, you are not allowed to go on FFXI at all due to fact that you will get a POL error saying you can't connect.

I tried running it with your suggested Driver version
Same problem, its not the maintenence also id assume, considering while i was unable to get it working a friend was playing the game.

I also had the same problem, after several days I figured out what was causing it.

Are you using a Soyo X-Series PS2 to USB Controller Adapter?
If so use the Newest BETA Drivers here

http://www.soyousa.com/downloads/filedesc.php?id=1981

Once I installed the BETA drivers the problem went away. Hope it works for you cause it was really frustrating for me.
