... seemingly at random. Not associated with any particular program either - happens while I'm gaming, listening to music, or even browsing websites - whether they have sound or not.
Sometimes it allows you to turn it back up, and other times it gets "stuck" and automatically drags right back down after being turned up.
I'm doubting it's a sound card issue, because it happened with the onboard sound as well as with the new PCI card we installed. Drivers for chipset and card are both current, and I've checked every setting I could think of ... disabled legacy audio in the BIOS and all that jazz as well.

You haven't got an audio volume control on your keyboard by any chance?
Whenever something happens for no apparent reason, the first step is ALWAYS to check for spyware. And if you have already done that, just tell me to go away :)
Virus scan and Ad-Aware all come up roses, and the darned thing is still turning down at random. :(
In fact we *do* have an audio control on the keyboard itself, although I doubt that's the issue since it's nowhere near the keys, really, and as far as I know the drivers for that part of the keyboard aren't even installed, but maybe it's bugging out on me. I'll try swapping it out and see what happens.

Just because its not near the keys doesn't mean it can't go bad...
How often do you clean your keyboard? if you've never cleaned it... get a can of compressed air, couple toothpicks, and be ready to be amazed at what comes out of it...
