I have been playing on PS2 for 1.5 years now, and I had heard that the PC looked better, with richer landscapes and such. So I get FFXI for the PC, log on, and notice the graphics are about on par with Final Fantasy 9. Very pixelated, grainy, and un-rich landscapes. I tried changing some settings but it keeps lookin crappy. And yes, I have a video card that can handle it (Radeon 256mb).

Any idea on how to fix this mess? Cause if it looks like this for everyone, PS2 blows away PC FFXI visually...

Thanks for any help you can give

Other info...
1024mb ram
3.2g P4 CPU
Radeon 256mb video card
200g harddrive, 140g free
Running Windows XP Home
Just started so no comment on frequency

Make sure you set the background resolution to the max that the config tool allows, I believe it's 1024 x 1024. That should sharpen it up a bunch.

Thank you, it did quite a bit. It looks nice now

However the colors still seem... faded sorta. Maybe its just that Im used to seeing it on a TV?

Hmmm...I think I know what you're talking about.

PS2, especially with S-Vid, seems brighter, more vibrant somehow than on PC. Personally, I like the softer colors better, seems to be more realistic than PS2's graphics.

Here's something for you if you aren't faint of heart:

Please note, if you mess with your registry and don't back it up, there is potential to royally ***** things up beyond all repair. I highly recommend you back up your registry first, and if you don't feel confident making these changes, don't make them at all.

I plan on doing some tweaks with the background resolution tonight, as I got a new 17" widescreen flatpanel monitor, it looks like you can go beyond the 1024x1024 for even smoother graphics. I'll post my results tomorrow.

EDIT:

Well my monitor only goes up to 1280 x 768 resolution. I set that as the game resolution, then set the background resolution to 1440 x 1440 using the registry edits and my goodness, it makes quite a difference. Everything was incredibly crisp, I'm quite glad I tried it.

Next I plan to mess with some of other settings, such as the MIP map settings and sound options (apparently you can change the number of sounds that play simultaniously). If people are still reading this I can post again with my results.
