Problem after FFXI UninstallFollow

#1 Oct 16 2005 at 8:09 PM Rating: Good

I uninstalled FFXI from my computer after I figured out that my video card wasn't up to par. After the uninstall, there is a pattern of long, black vertical lines in Add/Remove Programs in the "S" section right where "SquareEnix" would have been. The pattern of lines go on for quite some time; I can scroll down for a while and still see them.

I have contacted Dell tech support who had me reinstall my video driver, and that just made my screen flash black randomly (which makes me say "thanks a lot"). Once recently, as my computer was loading, the screen went black and never came back again; I had to reboot. Because they seem to not have the answer to my question and just made the problem more odd, I am hesitant to contact them again.

While these issues are not horrid, they are both irritating. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Processor type/speed: Intel Pentium M 2.00 GHz
Total Hard drive space/Free hard drive space: 35 GB / 20 GB free
Amount of Ram: 1006 MB RAM
Video card type: Is this my vid. card? Intel GM/GME Graphics Controller 64.0 Mb
Operating system: Windows XP Pro
Computer model number (if it has one): Dell Inspiron 700m
frequency of problem: Black lines: All the time Black flashing screen: Every hour to two hours

Unfortuntely (you're going to love me for this) the first thing to do is to try and get newer drivers on there for the graphics adapter. I'm not sure how current the Dell ones are but these ones from intel should be slightly newer and are probably worth trying. Be sure to get rid of the current ones via the control panel before you install them.

Please post progress.

Heh! Well, I downloaded it, uninstalled the video, restarted, and went to reinstall.....and it cannot be installed on this computer. You should see just how -strange- my computer looks at the moment. I am not sure where to go from here. Download from Dell? Bah. *ponder*

I will go that route I suppose, just to get a video driver back for the moment.

Okay, I downloaded the driver from Dell, and all is back to normal (whew, that was sorta scary for a minute there...). The black lines are still in Add/Remove Programs, but I have no clue on the black screen flash. I have to mess around on the computer a while first. It is a random occurance.

I wonder why I couldn't install that other driver *shrug*.

Edit: Yep, the "black screen flash" is still there. I can make it happen pretty much every single time I reboot as things load. Other than that it seems random.

Unless i've assumed you've got a different graphics adapter than what it *looks* like you have, those should have installed, but i don't think that's the case as i've looked up your Dell machine on the web.

I'd get back onto the phone with them if i were you, hopefully you have a case number handy, tell them what you've done and you should be able to ove forward with them to some sort of resolution.

Just in case you were curious, I spoke with Kaolian in IRC and he thinks I am having slow and painful video card death. There is a chance it has something to do with Direct X and I need a Windows reinstall, so I am planning on doing that this weekend, and if that doesn't work, calling Dell back with the video card death information. Thanks for all of your help though.

Heh! Oh, I know it. I bought this laptop with gaming being the furthest thing from my mind, and now regret it. I don't know why I even bothered trying to do FF...I just looked at my RAM and processor speed, and prayed. I hadn't played a pc based video game in a good 2 years or so, and was more focused on buying a good machine to get myself through college. Too bad for me.

Now I have this laptop with a pretty nice amount of RAM and processor speed that can't play anything. How sad.

It's more the onboard graphics that are holding you back, Intel onboard chipsets are terrible 3D performer's.

Since the big patch in Oct. I have had probs with POL and ffxi. I can't read anything on POL it's just a bunch of messed up letters and sometimes the occasional word. When I was finally able to get through to the game I saw nothing but a bunch of colored squares/pixel blocks whatever.

So, I figured after I mived I would wipe my hard drive and try again. So now that I have done that I am still recieving the same problen. I can't even set up POL viewer because I can't read anything or see half of the buttons.

Honestly, I have been gone a couple of weeks and I may have missed something. I know it's not my video card cause my husband is having similar problems and his is different.

Anyone else have this problem and know how I can fix it.

Thank you,

Nymia
