FFXI - Issues after new video card installationFollow

#1 Oct 17 2005 at 9:06 PM Rating: Decent
Well, i changed video cards b/c, long story short, the display of avatars and invisible chars. were "patchy" and didn't display correctly (i had tried to see if it was just the monitor....and it wasn't). the previous video card i had was a nVidia 5900 FX and i got an ATI 9800 pro All-in-wonder. i installed the new drivers and all the neccessary whatnots to make it run. however when the game would have gone into full screen mode after clicking the "Play" button, the screen instead goes black and then goes back to the POL viewer and gives the same message as when you "ALT+TAB" out of the game when in full screen. and i've tried many muliple times to get past the screen to see if the first time was just a fluke (...it wasn't), then i decided to reinstall FFXI incase something about having a nVidia card then changing to an ATI card might have caused some problems, anyways it's still not able to go to full screen. don't know if there is just something i overlooked, or if there are incompatiblities between ffxi and ATI or whatever. any help is mighty appreciated^^;

Make sure you've uninstalled your old drivers completely, if you haven't uninstalled them from the control panel, do it.

After that use a little tool called driver cleaner to get rid of any remaining NVidia Files and then re-install your ATI card, preferably get rid of the ATI drivers in the same manner too and then reinstall them. Get the latest version from the ATI website too.

I've noticed that if you uninstall ATI drivers without using something like drivercleaner, they are still in your C:\Windows\System32 folder and Windows will pick them back up when you reboot.

At one point I had to boot into safe mode, go out to that folder and delete anything that began with "ATI". Catalyst drivers are now at 5.10, I've installed them on my machine and they work fine with FFXI.
