Improving FFXI Performance on my PCFollow

My system has the following specifications:

Windows XP Home Edition
Pentium 4 [2.4Ghz]
120GB HD - 60GB Free Space
512MB of RAM
GeForce4 MX 440 with 128 MB VRAM (Using latest drivers: v78.01)

I'm looking for ways to boost my computer's performance in terms of FPS when I'm playing FFXI.

In parties, I usually see FPS of around 15 which is acceptable to me and easy to handle. In alliances of 18 people, especially during sky runs, I usually see FPS in the single digit area. And during actual god fights with 18+ people for swapping in, I usually dont get to see much more than 4 FPS, and regularly get framerates of 0.4 o.O

I'm running FFXI with majority of effects off, such as Weather, Shadows, Footsteps, and Battle Effects as well as lower animation rates. Environmental Animation is down to None, and I'm running it at a Backround Resolution of 512 x 512. My textures are set to compressed High, and MIP mapping is enabled. Basically, I've done what I can to increase the performance within the game and the configuration tool, but I'm still seeing poor framerates and excessive lag that hinders my performance as a character.

Is there anything I could do to improve the performace outside of configuring FFXI? Should I consider upgrading the computers RAM to perhaps 1GB? I've also looked at switching to perhaps the v.56.64 drivers recommended on the POL site. Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated ^^

I noticed a big improvement when I upgraded to 1gb of high performance RAM.

I run an Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2ghz, Radeon 9800pro and I rarely dip below 23-25 in lower jueno now with the memory upgrade.

That's a pretty low end graphics card, I'd start by upgrading that to something designed for gaming.

Maybe a Radeon 9600 or higher or a GeForce 6600 or higher, spend about $150 US and you'll get waaay better performance.

The GeForce 6600 has a noteriety for problems here and there, by the way, so if you want to get more performance in FFXI only, get the Radeon.

Thanks a bunch for the replies thus far! (*Rate up*)

I'm considering getting the Radeon 9600 as suggested, my question now is, which one?

Radeon 9600 List via Newegg.com

I'm kind of new to the whole fixing/upgrading computer thing. Outside of case fan installations, I don't know much on what to consider when purchasing and installing new hardware. I see Radeon 9600's by multiple manufacturers (Sapphire, GECUBE, MSI, etc) and multiple variations (PRO, SE, XT, etc). I don't really understand the differences other than the price.

I guess what I'm looking for is a pleasant boost in performance, while not breaking the bank ^^; I'm looking into keeping my spending around the $80 range, unless its necessary for me to go higher if I want the performance (Which means about a month or two more saving ._.)

But ya, the only game I play these days is FFXI ^^;

This is the one I've been looking into.

The price is within my general spending range, and it appears to be compatible with my system as far as I can tell. However, I would like opinions from you guys.

Are there better ones at or below this general price range?

Is anything I should know about my computer before I proceed to purchase this, or a card like this?

If I do purchase a card and install it, would I have to worry about any other aspects of my system that could possibly bottleneck the overall performance?

Other than that, any general advice I would greatly appreciate from you guys.

Looks fine, Sapphire are a pretty good brand too.

A 9800 is really worth the price difference, but if you can't find a an affordable one a 9600 is fine.

Whatever gpu you get, avoid SE variations of cards like the plague.

Solving the next bottleneck after your vid card would be another 512 in RAM, but it won't stop you from getting decent framerates outside of low jeuno.

Other things you should know..
Guessing how old your motherboard by the other specs we are assuming you have an AGP slot for the video card, you might want to doublecheck that.

The MX is a PCI video card?

I thought there aren't any vid cards that are PCI that can run FFXI...So he must have an AGP slot.

The CPU and RAM woun't bottleneck it that badly. Yours are fine. A friend of mine has something equivalent to yours, with the old RDRAM RAM and the Ti4800. Runs fine on his and he already did dynamis runs...

I'm having the same problem.. My PC is about equivalent to yours. I bought a Nvidia GeForce 6200 I think and it didn't work ;_; So Is a Radeon preferable then? Because if it is I'll upgrade. Thanks in advance :)

Disable antivirus, some of them take up an annoyingly large chunk of the processor, when disabled, you should notice better Performance.

====================

Check for Spyware from time time, some are sneaky...

====================

At least 1 Gigabyte of memory for basicly any gaming system, 2 Gigabytes if you have a really fast computer to make more efficient use of the processor (less HD memory swaps)
