OK. Recently got a laptop. Love it so far. Except for one minor thing.

I tried hooking up my headphones to it and turns out it doesn't have a 1/4th or 1/8th inch jack there, but some kind of thing called SPDIF. I like to listen to streaming audio off of other people's wifi, but I can always use the built in speakers...in which case others can hear what I am listening to.

So I went to Radioshack. I asked them what it was. They are like O.o??? One guy says he saw something like it, but can't remember what it is for. No idea if I can get an adapter for it to convert to 1/8th or 4th inch headphone ports. Dumbasses...

Any way, I don't want to waste half a day to go to J&R to see what it is; I have like 3 papers to do.

So yeah...what in hell is this SPDIF port and where can I get ear/headphones for it or an adapter that will convert to the standard ports...

Try plugging the headphones into the audio-out jack. The place you would plug speakers into.

Also, the SPDIF device is an "RCA"-type port. It's for audio transferring from one device to another. It's not an analog device. For example, if you have a componant stereo, you will attach each componant vie SPDIF of RCA.

Look a little more, there will be a standard audio-out port.

SPDIF is just a digital audio output really.

SPDIF is an acronym for ...
* Sony/Phillips Digital Interface Format

Sorry. I didn't make it clear enough.

The only two audio related ports are the SPDIF-out and the 1/8th inch Mic-in.

I don't have a standard 1/8th inch out port.

Where can I get an adapter or other solution?

I'm really not too sure, I know that some speaker sets have SPDIF input and you should be able to hook it up to an amplifier no problems. I'd say there's definitely an adapter out there somewhere it's probably going to be a matter of tracking one down though.

Is it a round plug or one of the square optical plugs?

Looks like a round plug.

I guess J&R it is then. If they can't help I'm screwed with having people know what I listen to.

Thanks guys.

Ok. What is the price range for the bluetooth solution and what is a price range for a PCMIA sound card with the usual ports?

Well, they do have USB voice chat heatsets

Tigerdirect has some, not suggesting going there to buy them necessarily... just providing proof they exist
