Running at double resolution...or something.Follow

Ok, I`ve been running FFXI for longer than I care to remember and it`s suddenly decided it doesn`t want to run any more. I haven`t made any changes to my PC, or in fact touched it at all since the last time it was used to run FFXI, so I have no idea whatsoever what`s caused this. I`m pretty sure the root of the problem is my monitor, which is a 1240x1024 flatscreen. The problem is that every time I try to run FFXI, it goes back to POL with the "full screen lost" error message. I can get it to run by changing the resolution to 1240x1024 in the FFXI config menu, but for some reason it makes all the windows (HP bars, chat log, status effects, mouse cursor, etc) appear at about half the size they should.

If I was using pretty much any other monitor I could just half the resolution, but because of the ratio of my monitor if I try any other resolution then FFXI thinks it isn`t getting enough fullscreen attention and sulks. I`ve tried using a windower and messing around with the resolution settings in that, with the same result. Setting the windower resolution to 640x480, then maximizing the window sets the FFXI overlay to the size it should be, but throws off the mouse cursor wildly. I honestly have no idea how FFXI has been running with this monitor before now. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I`ve been tinkering with it for a while to no avail, but I have seen a lot of different error messages.

There's an option in the Config Menu (maybe under Windows?) in the game that allows you to change the ratio. Have you tried changing that? There are 5 different settings I believe, maybe one of those will make your menus etc. all the proper size.

I tried that, it only affects the background, not the overlay. I`ll have another look through the windows to see if I missed anything though.

That's normal and many people prefer smaller UI elements. The elements are defined as being a certain number of pixels, so if you increase the number of pixels the objects will be drawn to a smaller portion of the screen.

It's been a while since I played ffxi, but I don't remember being able to resize anything. Very poor UI was one of the things I didn't like about the game.

Gimme a model number and brand for that display and I'll see if I can help. Also want to know what the error messages were if they were anything other than POL messages (any windows error box or anything mentioning the video card) and what video driver and version your running.
