Terrible sound problem in ffxiFollow

This happens to me only in ffxi and in no other game. The music is a good volume, not too quiet not too loud. The battle effect sounds, airship passing overhead, water noises etc are insanely loud. To the point that i have to turn off the sound or take out headphones. I have tried changing sound effects in the options menu in game and all that changes for me is the sound it makes when your scroll or close a window. I have tried changing the sound volume in the sound card (philips psc605) and that doesnt help either. dxdiag says everything is fine with the sound card and like i say it only occurs in ffxi. Any tips? Its frustrating not being able to have the sound on without having a headache.
