I recently changed my family's Windows XP system to a multi-user setup(one account for each member of the family). Shortly afterwards, Windows went insane. Several programs have ceased to function, and a copy of Half-Life 2 did not function at all(A reinstall of the game fixed this, but there are occasional problems). Other problems also occur, such as programs not exiting properly during shutdown.

Has anyone else had this problem? At this point in time, I doubt there is anything possible to restore the system(short of a reinstall of windows), but I haven't completely given up hope. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might want to confirm the account types for each user, there's a chance that some software might not work on limited accounts if they have been installed using an Admin account. Short of a re-install of windows and setting up the accounts with a fresh system the best you can probably do is re-install the offending programs one at a time.

Having several user accounts is a bad idea for windows, god forbid you get hit with spyware and have to clean it out of multiple accounts.

Alright, thanks for the tip. The thing is most of the problems also occur on the admin account.

Really? Some Windows XP reference manual said multiple user accounts was a good idea, on account of viruses being only able to spread to a single account. Or does spyware not need proper permissions?

Multi-user OS my ***, if I can get my family trained its Linuxtime for that comp.

The Windows permissions system in NTFS is... well, kinda weak. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a fair amount of spyware that gets around it.

Linux FTW - just make sure your install disk(s) aren't scratched, and that your system doesn't have issues with booting off disks over 128GB.

Spyware pretty much permeates all when it's designed to do so. In can get in via one account, but pollute all of them.
