I found a Laptop, and was playing with it today. Trying to see if its worth repairing. When I push the start up botton, the start up logo Compaq screen pops up, then everything goes black. I can hear a weird scratching sound, then it restarts. Never goes past the blackness. The Keyboard looks like it was beaten with a stick or something. Few keys are left, and the metal under it is bent. The mousepad doesn't respond, and the CD drive sounds like metal rubbing against metal. Monitor screen is fine, from what I can tell.

What do you think? This sounds beyond repair or should I have a pro take a look? Any info. would help us out. take care and thank you.

It looks like a great machine, but treated horribly! If it's cheaper to save it, then to buy a new one. I'd like to save her. Don't want to see such a great thing go to complete waste. If any more info. is needed about this problem, ask. ^^ & ><

update: After leaving it alone plugged in for a while. It stopped restarting and is now displaying a message. "A disk read error occurred Please Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" Over a solid black screen.

update: After restarting as stated above, some sort of boot-system flashed. Wasn't able to read it all. But that caught my eye. Now all I can see is "Operating System not found" over a solid black screen.
(Interesting playing with this laptop, Like trying to make an egg hatch. ^^)

Could just be as simple as a broken hard drive. Depending on the age of the machine they're often not worth replacing though.

The hard drive is probably damaged. This would explain the scratching sound, and the OS not found message. Not much you can do with it.

So most, if not all of the main devices, need replaceing? Making buying another PC simplier and more cost effective? Sounds about right. Thanks for your thoughts.

I looked up the model, it's only a few years old. >< Also was only laying outside a few hours before I found it. Drove by that same spot before.

At least now I get to cut open the flat screen, and see whats inside! ^^

Lol, don't be so hasty!

Getting a drive replaced would probably cost less than $150 US depending on what you get. Might be worth taking it to your Local Computer Store to see what can be done and if they can check the drive for defects. It does sound like the drive is at fault though.

LoL, Haven't looked inside yet, but tempted. ^^ I plan on haveing a local PC examiner guy have a look. Fairly sure the CD Rom drive thingy is bent or broken, as well as the batterry pack. Not positive. If I can repair it for a a small fraction of the brand new price, i may. Just hope the mourning dew didn't creep inside too.

Would love to own a laptop again! Had one back in the 90's, but some bigger kids took my toy. ^^; lol But might be a few more days till i get around to having a Pro take a look. Is Best Buy known for being a good place for PC fixes? If not, are there any other stores/shops you think would better suit my PC needs?

Thanks for the above replies.
