So I'm planning on getting a new laptop pretty soon, and I noticed the video card I had hoped to get isn't on SE's list of supported cards.

Should work fine.
Just because it's not on SE's list doesn't mean it wont work. From my experience they have no idea themselves as the "recommended" drivers they say to use are about the worst.

I'm running FFXI on a Dell Inspiron 6400 that has the same graphics chip as you stated above. It runs just fine :)
That card does indeed have plenty of horsepower to run the game. Anything over a 9800 will run great.
