There it is, brand new outta the box, just brought it home yesterday. Now I need some help if possible from all the guru's around here. I'm not completely illeterate but I'm no professional. I need someone who as a lil bit of experience with the Windows Vista Ultimate.

There are a few problems I'm having that I hope everyone here can solve so I don't have to deal with idiots in tech support or at the store. Yes I did by the puter at bestbuy for a nice discount but I'm not that skilled with this new operating system. I'm also aware that Microsoft normally has a handful of bugs when they release there new operating systems.

ok, well last night I got home and got all the setup crap outta the way and got everything hooked up'd. I tried to pop in my FFXI Playonline CD + Game + Expansions and the autoplay feature would just not work. I couldn't get any of the install done. I tried to go through it using "Computer" the new "My Computer" or w/e and I would try and read the CD and it would crash. I then tried using a DVD + Music CD (Real + Bootleg) and I just couldn't get anything at all to work. After messing with this for a few hours I checked over the system specs and I only noticed a CDRW/DVDRW? drive. Now with my old puter I could use this drive to read and play cd's as well, has this changed with vista? If so do I just need to buy a CD/DVD drive thats a read-only?

now I was also having another problem with a game called Gunbound. Its a cheap cheasy online/download game. My new computer came with a version of McAfee and it came with the firewall active. Now I know a lil bit about this and tried to change the perameters of the firewall to allow this game to connect any way it wants. The problem comes in when I log into the game and then it checks to see if you have the game installed. Which I don't. What it then does it sit there trying to connect to their server for hours on end. My connection to my broadband is perfectly fine and I can surf the web but I just can't seem to connect to this damn game.

If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative. Please only usefull posts also no flaming on what is or where I got it please. I would to keep this as an information base for all the people who just Vista and have the same problems I do.

Welcome to Vista, you officially bent over and took one for Microsoft.

Sorry, I am against vista in every shape and forum however that will not stop me from helping you as I was "oh so lucky" to get a pre-release copy of it which I destroyed after tying it out in a test system.

Vista is buggy as hell, don't let anyone fool you and to be honest don't expect to be able to take it to a repair shop and have someone know what they are doing with vista.

My suggestions;
1) Try and get Windows XP Pro or Home and install it on another Hard drive and dual boot it.

2) Try to get another DVD/CD ROM to see if possibly you got a DoA drive which does happen even though they are suppose to test it at the factory level.

3) Format your Hard Drive and install Windows XP. . . wait I said that one already but with good reason.

Sorry you had to find out the hard way but Vista's naggy interface which stops you from doing simple functions because it's a "security" function only hinders you rather then helping you and is no more secure the Windows XP. You can also try the drive with a store bought Music CD to see if that will play.

If you disable the User account Controlls idiocy, and set the interface to classic mode, FFXI WILL run on Vista. It may require the POL version from the "vanadiel collection DVD" but it will launch.

I can login just fine with UAC and Aero. What I am having a problem with is the default nVidia driver won't load Character models other than my own. I have tried to find a newer driver at the nVidia site but they don't have a Vista driver for the GeForce Go 5200 card there. I also checked the Dell website since it is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and had no luck either. If anyone knows of a place to get updated drivers for the GeForce Go 5200 I would really appreciate it.
