IRC 101 by yours truly...

Your options menu is your friend!

screenies

Finding a channel:
Looking for specific content? Certain chat topics, files etc?
The 4th icon at the top (which is the earth and a couple other symbols) is what you need to click. This will bring up a search function. Simply type in what you want; mp3, divx, ffxi etc and it will scan through the tens of thousands of channels on that server and filter out your specifications.

Column 1 displays the channel name (ie: #ffxi), column 2 displays the number of people inside the channel, column 3 is basically a welcoming heading

Right click the channel and select join, or double click it and voila.. you are now entered in that channel!

We decided we want some tasty classical tunes. This is is your run of the mill mp3 channel, so we can use our simple commands here..

useful commands for the newb channels

@find !find !rules !help

want some Berlioz? type in @find Berlioz in the channel window

At the top of the program (depending on what you have searched for) you may get flooded with responses. "Hey i have these songs from berlioz simply type this to get it! or get my entire list by typing @mynamehere"

So, this specific person has 443 files relating to a search string of berlioz. I am now in berlioz heaven! Seeing as how 443 songs is waaaay too many for their bot to name them off to you one by one, they recommend you get their list of files. so that is what we are going to do. You can do this by typing in @personsnamehere

You will see them private messaging you in the main channel that you are in queue position #/#. Once yer transfer begins, a dialog box will show up with the person who is sending you the file, the name of the file, the speed of transfer, where its being saved to and the time remaining. (keep in mind on these general mp3 channels like this, good speeds are hard to come by... and by good i mean 50k+ lol)

Oh, and btw, mirc has a nice little built in feature in which whatever text you high lite, will be automatically put into your clipboard. So there is no need for CTRL+C in mirc

So, now we have a nice little text document (sometimes they put in a compressed file) and we can browse their *catalog* if you will.

Opening that text document we see a plethora of songs... assorted alphabetically.

All right, this person has an album i want! Now, time to download.

These channels are almost always equipped with flood rules. A good rule of thumb I always used when getting albums from these general mp3 channels is.. no more than a rapid succession of 3 requests. Copy 3 lines of songs (@borntoland hard Berlioz_-_01_-_This_-_Is_-_A_-_Classical_-_Song_-_.mp3 will be what they typically look like) and paste them in the MAIN channel, ya know the channel you connected to. For each request you make, the person who is hosting the file will send you another private message thru the main channel telling you... that is file 1/10 you are in queue position 10/100. This means u can have up to 10 songs at once queued with them and that you are the 10th person in line.

So, request what youd like (up to their at one time limit) and browse the net until some finish and u can request more off them.

That's my beginner's guide to mIrc.

Next lession, advanced commands, xdcc :-)

Have fun!
