When playing certain games (FFXI using windower, Oblivion, NWN, probably more) my screen freaks out and produces rectangles of some colors on my screen. The games are still playable, but not enjoyable, unfortunately. The problem started about a week ago, after I installed Oblivion. I was creating my character and my computer decided to restart itself, since them I've had the troubles. I'm fairly certain my computer isn't overheating, it's been shut down pretty often these days and my room is far from toasty normally. I tried re-installing both my drivers and direct x and so far, nothing.

My stats are:
Nvidia GeForce 6600GT (93.71 drivers)
DirectX 9.0c
AMD 64 3200+ (2.4g)
1GB RAM

Pictures:
Neverwinter Nights
FFXI

As always, my thanks in advance.

Edit: Just looked into normal FFXI. It looks screwy in both window and normal mode, difference is that in normal FFXI the UI is fine.

You may wanna try getting a new video card. The Artifacting on the screen is crazy.. Maybe even a new power supply. can't really tell you what's wrong till I know more about the situation. Is this a prefabbed PC or what? what OS are you using and when did this happen

Yeah, mostly built. All parts came together minus the graphic and sound cards(audigy 2). Of course, I had to upgrade the power supply after I got those, so now I'm using an Antec truepower 430w. The computer came running with Windows Media Center edition, I've been updated to SP2 for a while now.

The exact date is May 6, 2007. A little over a week ago. Cutting it close to two weeks ago, actually.

As far as how it happened, I can't really go into more detail as there are no more real details. I had just finished installing Oblivion and was playing my freshly installed software when my PC just flicked over to the boot up screen. Yup, suddenly my computer was restarting. I started up normally and everything is running smoothly but my graphic card.

I would say since the anomoly is showing up on the Screenshot's your video card prolly took a dump.. It happen's maybe go buy a aftermarket cooler of it and give it a shot. Come to think of it I believe I had the exactly same problem back in the day when I bought my first 6600 ALONG time ago. I actually took it out of the PC and left it on a shelf for about 5 months used it again and it was fine. I would say it might be time for a new video card :P

Don't say that... You sure know how to make someone's wallet cry! :/

Defrag your hardrive.....

one thing about oblivion, it is a very dirty game when it comes to botching your HD. I just installed it on my newest machine yesterday which other than drivers and such is a completely fresh install. Massive fragmentation already.

Odd rectangles amy be a hardware issue. an nvidia 6600 should not display those under normal circumastances. Try running the directx rd tests and see if they work.
