FFXI - Install on 2nd Computer QuestionFollow

Hi all...

I recently installed my copy of FFXI onto a second computer, brand new Dell with 512mb RAM, 80G HD, X86 family processor.

I was all set, good to go, was playing along just fine. Did a Garrison run with my LS, it was all good. Didn't fire up FFXI for a few weeks, and when I went to log in the other day, I got the following Windows message:

The instruction at "0x7c911404" referenced memory at "0x00000078". The memory could not be "read".

I ran Memtest86, which came back clean, AdAware and Spybot come back clean as well. Is this a case of bad memory that Memtest didn't find, or is it something else? Any solutions, ideas? (other than chucking the box out the window)

This seems very familiar, are you running Windows XP or Vista by chance?

Ok, well after doing a little research this may be related however how to resolve it I am still looking into.

Troubleshooting Article

The linked article above relates to NT OS/s such as Windows 2000/XP/Etc.

I don't have a lot of Vista know how so I will research a explanation if you get this in Vista however if memory serves me Vista like to make their errors "User Friendly" which end up being more vague then of any use.

Whee Edits, ok after looking around the net it looks to be just a general file corruption which could be multiple things, such as a google toolbar all the way to system files.

Your best bet is to make sure you have all your updates done along with any hot fixes then try it again. If it still not working, try to do a system restore to a previous date. Now if that isn't working, honestly it's faster to backup your data and reinstall usually then it is ti dump a ton of man/woman hours into trying to figure it out.

This sounds like you have a corrupted file in your win32 folder. I would suggest you restore your computer to the earliest restore point to see if this problem is still there. Otherwise, you will need to use a registry scanner to see where this corrupted file is. If all else fails, I would suggest backing up your system and reinstall your XP.

Edit: If you're running Vista, I would listen to the above poster. I had this error code a year back on windows XP.
