Chugging Framerate in FFXIFollow

My framerate keeps dropping down to about 15 fps(or worse) usually when in a party. I've tried messing with about every single graphics setting in the config, and at most I get an improvement of 1 or 2 frames.

My setup is-

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz
Memory: 2 GB DDR 2 PC2-5300 Corsair Memory
GPU: nVidia 8800GTS 640 MB PCIe x16-June 1st 2007 drivers
Hard drive: SATA, 7200 RPM Samsung drive of some kind
NIC: Integrated gigabit ethernet, connected to wireless bridge on a Wireless-G network
Sound: Sigmatel, integrated on motherboard

My PC plays Source based games with HDR enabled and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion without any hiccups whatsoever, yet its barely playable with FFXI. Is this a driver issue?

No, FFXI is almost a 100% CPU ridden game and even the most powerful of computers have a hard time running it due to it's bad performing and unstable base.

Your best bet is to read this and make adjustments where possible.

Really? The C2D is pretty much the best processor out there atm, unless it isn't properly taking advantage of dual cores? And I've tried everything in that guide; the best improvement I see is 1 or 2 FPS gain.

Well essentially, FFXI for PC is just an emulation of the PS2 version, so anything more than that wont really help you. You have to remember that this game was released 5 years ago, as well.

Like you said, 1-2FPS is pretty much all your going to get and unfortunately there isn't much you can do, my 4 year old PC will run it just as well a brand new, top-notch PC.

I thought of something, try downloading old drivers for your graphics card, sometimes FFXI doesn't run well with new ones.

I'd do that, except the oldest drivers for my card are from November 2006(and they don't work well with FFXI) and that older drivers would break compatibility with a few other of my games.
